Surfers and shark fisherman in south Florida have always been closely linked because both groups have to deal with the waves in one way or another,the surfer chooses to ride the waves and the land based shark fisherman has has to get through the surf on a kayak,rowboat,raft or surf board to get his bait out to deeper water.Many times surfers will gladly drop a bait beyond the wash for a sharker that knows how to ask.The surf board was one of the original tools that the sharkers got to use for deploying baits out to deep water.Many of the shark fisherman did'nt like surfing or the idea of dangling limbs in the water while paddling out and away from the beach so they looked for and old aluminum jon boat to use.Other sharkers would go to a local K Mart and buy a kiddie inflatable raft with plastic oars and use that until it gave out usually from a shark hook tearing a big hole in it.Back in the day at the south beach pier the guys would sometimes be using a rowboat on one corner of the pier taking out shark baits and on the opposite corner they would be taking them out with a surf board. When the surf got too rough to get through it with a rowboat the surf board would be thrown from the end of the pier into the water then the person would jump from the pier, get on the board, and paddle out to the desired spot.After seeing all the surf boards with huge chunks bitten off in California and Australia i don't have much desire to take my shark baits out on a surf board but much rather use my trusty old kayak.
