Heartbreaking article about our favorite childhood fishing pier (shark fishing headquarters for the shark club)before it was demolioshed in 1984.The Miami beach mayor and commisionners decided to destroy it without public having a word in it's destruction.Crooked politicians at there very best.
Here's the link.

William,
I hope this article goes a long way on educating our new up-and comming fisherman, never trust a pollititian when it comes to anything, they will tell you one thing and do another,i don't see a peer in the future of miami for a very long time,up here in lake worth our pier had been sitting waiting for repairs for i don't know how long, but now that it is open,it closes at 8 pm because of the turtles, they just happen to nest in lake worth only,so the beach must close by night time so the light's don't misguide the new hatchling's,hell what about the rest of the 100 or so hi-rise condo's on the beach.yeah they all turn off their light's to.the beach is where the young crowed used to hang out,go figure.anyway while the peer waited to get funds to be repaired, the downtown got a new facelift brick roads new light's.and the pier wait's,taxes go up and the pier wait's,get it in writting or better in a mafia contract.when you guys get to be 50-60's ask your'e self how many of you're favorite spot's still exist.or are exsesible.any of the new key's bridge's are fishing accsesible you say use the old bridges are there.forward 40-50 years,do you think they are goin to put any money in to them, for a bunch of cry baby fisherman who are just a nussance, the way they see it a good huricane will take care of the whole matter and presto no more nussance.don't belive me look at the flagler bride that is a historical landmark, yeah i see them fixing it right now. they only belive in one thing and that is self preservation.the last guy that really stood out for the sportsman is long gone. and his name was TEDDY. if you don't know the last name than you better read up on history, when men where men and yes men' yes today or tomorow.if i take you fishing you hold the rod,if i take you hunting you hold the gun,I PAY TAXES SO MY CHILDREN CAN DO WHAT I DID,I PAY TO FIX ALL THING'S PUBLIC NOT WHAT SUIT'S THEM.public beach, they are going, and going.and soon guess what,
delray all over again.anyway hope my ranting hast not bored you,but made you THINK.

I remember when they built that piece of crap over by government cut, I knew it wouldnt fly, they shut it down now, what the hell good for fishing was it, hmmm. EVER? them bastards knew what they here doing. they ruined southbeach as far as I am concerned, they knew if they built a decent fishing pier, some would use it for sharkfishing even if they were able to make that illegal, like naples did on that pier. they all will go to hell for what they have done!
They even torn down that parking lot that usta be for the dog track, most dont even know there was a track at the end of the south beach...oh well its all lost now. and it aint ever coming back.
you still hoping for a decent fishing pier, it will never happen, the powers that be would never allow it!

its a shame that the true south beach locals, I mean the people hew were south beach, the people hew actually lived there, never had a say in what would happen to there neighborhood and there memories, unfortunately it will always be money making the decisions in this part of the world , I don't think they realized the profound impact that they caused some people when they made the decision to tear down the old south beach fishing peer and not replace it with a new one I for one have lost a large part of my childhood memories I think this is an experience that teaches us to get more involved in our community and that way at least we'll have a fighting chance of conserving our memories and stile of life that was and can still really be south beach living not this commercial industry that is portrayed as south beach living. i don't mean to insult any one of there sexuality put it is not appropriate that two groan men make out in public in front of children or hew ever is there to witness it or gay shows in the street or over priced restaurants and tourists that have no care for our environment.
south beach was clean there was very little crime and everyone new each other.
now that's what I call living .
I truly miss these days.

I remember riding my bike to go fishing on that pier and your right no one had any say just like when hurricane andrew destroyed haulover pier and i guess that just did them a favor bc they were never going to rebuild. That just helped them out. The things we remember is just what they will be memories. The fishing spots that i use to fish from south beach when i lived there to broward county where i live now are just disappearing and its all about the mighty$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$. Might as well fish in your aquarium at home.
