Our team "Hammer Fever" we started off slow but we've picked up steam and have overcome some problems like stolen coolers to get on the board. It feels great to be back on the beaches and bridges after the bone chilling temps and fish kills we had in Florida this past winter.Springtime fishing holds all the promise of things to come for those shark hunters who persevere and learn to read the signs in Nature. From all indicators this will be a good year for big bull sharks. You know you're doing good when you're driving home half asleep but fully awake after just catchinhg a mess of fish. Here's a look at some of Team Hammer Fever's sharks. These are the ones on my camera JD Hammer will post his once he has developed his.

RV'ing and shark fishing -a nice combination

The Sharks caught by Team Hammer Fever

Sandra fighting her first shark of the night and Jd Hammer coaching her

Sandra and Will with Sandra's first tipper 5 ft 2 inches

Shannon's first of the night (more pictures available in Sandra's camera)

Shannon's with another blacktip shark
The action was hot ,every 15 minutes a rod would scream as another bait was engulfed by a hungry tipper.Jd Fagan and I who got to the beach last were having to run back and forth to help Shannon and Sandra with there sharks but for me it became a task because I was pooped from two days of shark fishing in the keys with very limited sleep.Quite a night to remember for Shannon and Sandra who had the fresh Bonita's from the driift boat but I was having no luck at all with my frozen Amberjack baits brougt from Fiesta Key campground. We made the best of it and had a few dropped baits and some cut-offs.

Jd Fagan,Mark and I pose with Fagan's 400 lb test bitten right threw

At one point the shark fishing couple of Shannon and Sandra had a double header and I just had to have a picture of that

Sandra prevailed, and Shannon lost his -Sandra's second tipper -5 foot 5 inches

A beautiful morning on the beach and much needed sleep to start a new day

My shark fishing trainee awakens and is eager to commence our hunt once again

The beaches of Florida hold many treasures and not all have the sparkle of gold

A Great White shark tooth found on the beach is a wonderful gift for any fisherman

Finaly one for me after a sharkless night-Tipper 63 inches
Sunday night Jd Hammer,Jimmy and Mark left because Mark had school the next day so it was us Four helping each other out but in the afternoon Jd Fagan and I went to one spot and Shannon and Sandra went to another. We stopped and saw Travis from Team Cape Haze Rods who hooked us up with some fresh bonitas at $3 each. Thanks Travis.so we headed north to the Port Salerno area to see what we could find and we found some very productive spots. We had only a few hours left to fish when we found one beach that had some very key ingredients for succesful land-based shark fishing and chief among those is "distance from unloading spot to fishing spot"We were on the spot less then two hours and had a double header & caught two blacktip sharks neither one counts for this tournament because the first was caught by Jd Fagan(not in the tournament) and under the 5 foot minimum and the second shark because the passerby who took the pic did not press the right button!!Oh well that's the way things go sometimes.

Jd Fagan on our brand new beach

JD Fagan with his blacktip

the release

hooked up with the blacktip that was not to be.
Soon we hunt again.

This has been a tournament with some suprises and some very nice catches.Every year we learn a little more about Florida's great land-based shark fishing. We hope that what we learn through our efforts out in the field during the winter, year after year, will benefit Florida's interested sharkers that want to catch more sharks. One new suprise has been the quantity of bull, dusky and sandbar sharks in some of the deep west coast passes. This winter new Teams, fishing new areas, are showing us what March's cold water land-based shark fishing can produce for the determined shark hunter willing to travel long distances and brave the cold temps.I have seen teams stay day and night on a certain beach on one coast turn around and fish the coast on the other side of Florida the next.I am impressed with the effort and dedication that these teams have demonstrated and they are building formidible Teams able to compete at the highest levels. Our team has put forth a super effort and I'm proud of every one for there hard work and dedication. We have been fishing at one place or another every single night of this tournament and the results are showing.Shannon (south beach seaweed)lost a shark last night that almost emptied a 14/0 full of 130 lb mono .The beast was spooling the reel before it became entangled in a lobster pot rope and eventually kinked the #19 wire leader.JD Hammer caught a 8 foot bull shark and his son who is not in th.e tournament caught an 8 foot 6 inch bull shark during the same shark fishing trip.We have fished the keys,Palm beach,Stuart, the west coast,Sebastian Inlet and a few other places whose names I won't mention.Nights without much sleep, fisherman, huddled in damp but warm sleeping bags and eating cold food for days on end is part of doing what we do but having some maniac with a spiked 2 by 4 in bushes is not part of the plan.Colby Uva confronted some weirdo who was in the bushes next to there camp and found the weapon nearby. The man seemed to be stalking them and was arrested by local police after they discovered the spiked weapon in his possesion. At Sebastian Inlet i was awakened by a cast netter standing over me at 2 am as i lay in my sleeping bag,,,,,he refused to give to hover over me and I asked myself at that moment why these types always seem to come out at night and then act in irrational ways. The creepiness of night is intensified when one is encountered by these sorts of characters in the middle of the night.

JD Hammer on another shark

JD with his 8 foot bull shark

Jimmy's 8 foot 6 inch Bull

Morning on the west coast

the sandbar sharks that do not count because they were not included in the list of eligible points sharks

One of the main identifying features of the Sandbar shark -the ridge between the dorsal fin and tail

The team i fish with is TEAM HARD HOOKERS....AND I JUST GOTA SAY to all win or loose be ready cause there were alot of teams who fished hard.I know we started on 3/12 as soon as we knew the secret object . We saw some nice fish and watched one swim away and break our hearts. By monday Jimmy and James broke the oldman AKA (me). We left the east coast and returned to the west 8 hours later Jimmy and James were back on the east coast only to continue on to 5 more beaches and piers over the next 4 days and @ 10:53 fri nite still have baits in the water...WHATTTTTTTT!!!!! If all teams fish like this for the big hammer challenge should see some nice fish cant wait..
