Boca Grande
Me and my buddies from st.pete made are way down to boca grande 2 days ago. the night before i got a nice 70 pound tarpon from a guy, so we decided to go for some big hammers down south. we got there at like 2 in the morning cause we had to wait for someone to get some rays. i rowed that 2 chuncks of poon out on both my 12/0s, with in an hour i got the most confident sounding run from any shark i have ever heard the shark took off running like a bat out of hell and didnt stop for like 30 seconds so i put my rod in gear and let it tighten and started setting hook and it dropped it! we reeled it in and the chunk had no teeth marks! so that shark had to have a big enough mouth to put a 20 pound chunk in its mouth with out touching it with its teeth. we think it was a monster but i dont know.no runs after that so we packed up and left
what do you guys think was it a monster or what could it be?

well a small guess, but first a few questions, did you use a weight to hold down bait,if you did what was the condition of the mono used to tie, cut, shred,or totally missing, how much is left of it from the hooks to the end,did the hooks double back on the bait, what condition was the leader wire strait,if you had any kind of pressure on the fish and he swallod the bait whole it would have a bow in it,if he did swallow it whole the bend will be anywhere from 2' to however far back he took it,if he sucked it up strait(no teeth marks) to the gut the bend will be(say a 12' fish at about the 3-5' mark)wich brings me back to if you have no evidence of any of these things, then only the obius must be true,a fish swimming around smelling and checking out the bait, cought you're line on iether the dorsal or tail and ran with it,just a guess but check line back from leader for fraing or roughness.i always found that just letting the fish get tight and then setting up don't work as good as let it get tight, the run back10-20 feet that will really put presure on the the hooks to come out remenber every time you come down from setting up you give the shark a chance to spit, best is to put so much presure(between the fish running and you going the opisite way) that the hooks pull from the bait and are free to hook on to the fish, also 2 hooks are better.there are more senerios but it would take lot more writting.best teacher is experience ,so get back out there and put it to them.o by the way a big fish will spin you around like a top when you run back to get tight.
Jewfish love rays, will run with a bait and spit it out without leaving the telltale signs that a shark typically does ,,,,,,,,,,,that may very well be your answer.Keep fishing ,paying your dues and you will learn all you need to nail the BIG ONES!!!!

I've dove the old Phosphate Docks and the Boca Grande Hole and I counted over forty jewfish and a assortment of game fish a while back.I say goliath.Just my ..02 cents.
the same thing happened last night i was fishing the pier and my 16/0 that i just got started screaming i set hook it ran about 200 yards and then spit hook and my cable about 6 ft up from the hooks is reallly messed up, but atleast i know the 16/0 works lol

They call him flipper,flipper...just another one that could do that...last year on the skyway had 2-nights they ran up and down the pier taking everyones shark bait....they give a nice run...also very hard to hook but if you do say goodbye to your 1000+ yards of line....dave m
