Here are a couple of whites caught by a commercial boat about four years ago . One was caught about 15 miles off Naples and the other was caught about 60 miles north of here ( Naples,Fl ) . Would be a sweet catch in the gulf no matter how you did it. Both were young fish , I believe around 10 foot for each. I have found alot of teeth on Venice beach , all prehistoric , whites , tigers , megs , bulls , makos etc. I have never found a shark tooth in many years of collecting that was from modern times. My geuss is that person found a fossilized one.

Thanks Jeff (stargazer)great pics-great source. Thanks for sharing the pictures, story and your insight .My impression after reading the first comment on the newspaper story was that they found a modern great white tooth not a fossilized one.I'll tell you why I probably believe that to be the case.My friend (Mike)Seaweed sr(rip) who lived on South Beach and was at the beach almost daily for one reason or another found a bone white ,modern day,2 inch, perfect great white shark tooth one day right on the shore line. When I saw the tooth I told myself "there here".At that moment I knew that great whites are more common off Florida's beaches then we previously knew.My friend Chuck Doria who was a commercial fisherman off Miami for many years told me the story of the Great white that ate an 80 lb amberjack that they were reeling up behind the boat using a Bandit hydrualic reel.He said it was so big that when he first saw it he was at the transom of the commercial vessel ready to gaff and swing the amberjack over the side ,and the monster came from under the boat and grabbed the AJ in it's mouth,,,,,,,,, he almost had a heart attack it was so big .He said the head was 4 foot across from eyeball to eyeball. He could not believe what he was looking at right there practically in his back yard off the Miami Beach coast.

My uncle Danny (Joeys dad) told me (with my mako on back of the truck) ya know what swims the same water as a mako, a white. They spoted an avarage size white shark regulary 25mi off orange bch alabama this summer. saw it on the news. I may get to talk to that dude this winter. There are alot of porpus here and they feed on them and follow them and the tuna. My friend Jimmy who has long lined his whole life has seen one on the line and one eat a big yellowfin under the boat, both in the northern gulf. west of the desoto canion, close to the steps off La. My old teachers on navare pier actualy caught one in the mid 60s off the old wooden pier. Elmo caught it and everyone thought it was a mako until the next morning whin they noticed the collor and the v teeth at the top of the jaw. it was about 10' total. Winter fish. Roddie pate saw one about 8 years ago off navare pier in january. He said it may have been a huge mako but it was darker and over 15'. The old pier junkies around here take fishin serrious and are there every day possible. Most of the gulf is closed to longlining and more closures for this comming year. Less longliners beter ecosystem more fish. Swimmers beware!
