As many of you know me on here,my name is Shannon Bustamante , and i have a confession and a demand to share with anyone willing to listen. In the past I was as stubborn ,immature, and ruthless as every other idiot out there that kills every shark they come in to contact with!!!!! I would slaughter them in cold blood and sell them to pay for my fishing trips, and even save up money, because i would catch so many. But all of a sudden a close friend of mines for years (William Fundora) started Harassing me every chance he got about how wrong it was for me to be killing every shark i caught. At first i was in denial and very hard headed, as i would brush him off every time he would start. But as time went by i started educating myself more and more about sharks and the whole echo system, and the more i learned the more i changed.

Today i can honestly and proudly say that me and everyone fishing with me release every shark that we catch, which is a huge milestone, however it is not quite enough!!!!!! Not at all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I say this due to a documentary that i just saw and recommend, actually i beg everyone will watch and pass along to spread the word. The name of it is (Shark Water)beneath the oceans surface. As most of my friends know me, know the fact that i have a very wild and tragic background and i am very cold and numb with my sentimental side. However while watching this film i was almost brought to tears, it touched me so deep.Watching long liners slaughter these sharks and hearing the tragic facts and numbers of sharks killed a year, and the severity of it trickling all the way down to the destruction of human beings. My daughters kids, and the next generation not being able to enjoy shark fishing is one major blow, however it truly goes as deep as us running out of oxygen for raping our oceans which give us 70 % of it.

I was so affected by this film that i could not even waight until tomorrow to post this it had to be done immediately. My voice to help expand land based shark fishing, will now take a back seat for a long while as i now have a blood boiling vision to stop the killing of sharks!!!!

And the target is not the rod and reel fisherman that kills maybe 10 in a year if that, but the world wide long liners that kill 80-400 sharks a day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A perfect example of why there are not more people helping the cause is because the advanced knowledge, and research a person must do to find these facts, you cant find fliers or billboards any were sending out the message of why we must stop the long liners and the killing of sharks, or about how the extinction of sharks could mean the extinction of human life!!!! Absolutely no were!!!!

THAT HAS TO STOP NOW,AND EVERYONE WHO READS THIS AND DOES NOTHING,COULD HAVE BEEN THAT DECIDING VOICE!!!!!!!!!!

Even if you spread the word to your family, you helped make change, even if you made home made stickers and posted them every were, than you made change!!!!

Its up to the few of us who speak up!!!!!!

Sincerely : Shannon Bustamante

you are right shark populations are decreasing rapidly due to long liners and that picture of all of the fins on the roof of the building was saddening.
i will be glad to help, anyting i can do let me know.
p.s. if you want to lend that movie to a few people so they can see whats going on, go ahead im in no rush to get it back

That is DEEP Shannon!!I'm happy to able to say that i have made others aware of the need to protect the oceans and the creatures that live in them and the fish at the top of that food chain are the sharks and if they are offbalanced them every other living thing under them in the food chain is impacted in some way.

We must continue to work to abolish longlining for sharks on a worldwide scale. It's an uphill battle because not all countries have the economic wealth to stop there commercial fisherman from making a living and in many of the third world countries that are involved in longlining the tradition of being a commercial (for a living fisherman) is passed on from one generation to the next .Those people must find an alternative way of making a living that does not involve the slaughter of the ocean's APEX predators. We must try to educate the rest of the world as to the importance of the existenc of sharks in the oceans so they also will work to protect them .

IN A PREVIOUS POST DATED 6/12/2009
I predict it's just a matter of time and the sharks will be regulated just like the Jewfish were in 1989 or 1990.A complete no take law will be enacted in the coming years. As long as we can continue to catch and release everything will be OK.The shark populations will benefit from such a change in the laws but would other countries follow with laws to also protect the sharks off there shores,,,,,I doubt it.
The longliners and the third world countries that devestate the shark populations the most will continue there Ungodly slaughter and the decline will go on unless we bring attention to the problem on a worldwide scale. The next "WHALE WARS" will be "THE SHARK WARS"
We live in a changing world and each and everyone of us must learn to adapt to change if our sport is to survive and thrive0.

We welcome legislation but think that pressure on the guilty longlining countries should be increased as the #1 measure that would secure the future of worldwide shark stocks.

Exactly Will!!!!! the problem is that there are so few people like you and i who know the severity of these long liners who have raped there countries waters and now are invading our last sanctuaries for sharks, the Galapagos Islands, and Costa Rica!!!!

Like i said there is no commercial telling the millions of brain washed human beings that those same sharks that the public perception look at as ( human killers, and blood hungry monsters) are one of the post important things in the world!!!! with out sharks we lose 70% percent of our oxygen!!!!!

I just wish scientists and marine biologists with clout, could help spread the word more, because they are the ones who know first hand what extremities humans will encounter without sharks!!!!

NO MORE MARLBORO CIGARETTE BILLBOARDS, WE NEED A SAVE THE SHARKS BILLBOARD!!!!!
DO WHAT I AM DOING,INVEST IN SPREADING THE WORD!!!!!!!

I AM COMING OUT OF POCKET TO PURCHASE OR MAKE COPIES OF 50-100 COPIES OF THIS DVD(SHARK WATER) AND MAIL IT OUT TO EVERY MEMBER OF THE SHARK CLUB!!!! AND THE REST WILL GO TO FRIENDS AND FAMILY!!!!

I know someone at the University who is working to stop long lining for billfish in places such as costa rica I'm sure he would be interested in talking with you guys. The way he explains it is that they use fish likes sharks and sailfish as fillers so they can make more profit on sales of canned tuna. That way they make more money on the very expensive tuna. Similar to the way people in the illicit drug industry dilute drugs in order to make more profit while using less resources. There are definitely many people out there that are willing to help but awareness is a huge thing. The big problem is greed.. its going to be very hard to set up regulations especially in the many 3rd world countries such as mexico, costa rica, where longlining for sharks can be very profitable.. but it NEEDS to be done.

Shannon great post man. Props to you for being man enough to let yourself realize something that you may have not realized before. We all make mistakes and we are not perfect. I also know that you have learned from the old schooler's as I have, and back then it was different. You were a hero if you killed a Shark, or you sold them to pay for new gear, gas, or whatever, but because of the brutal and cruel acts of longliners, commercial fisherman, finners etc, times have changed and we need to speak up. There is going to be several FWC meetings next week in regards to the Sharks, and I feel like it is my duty to go there and give them my piece of mind and hopefully we can get these longliners and commercial fleets under control. I saw this movie about 5-6 months ago. The fact is don't you want to protect something that you love? I want there to be plenty of Sharks around so that my kids and even grand kids can catch them and get to see these magnificent perfect predators up close. I personally have always loved and admired Sharks since I was a little kid, and I treat them with the upmost respect that I can when I catch one. I feel great when I release a Shark back out to sea and see it swim away healthy as can be!!!!!

And for the record i am no tree hugger, but the Sharks need to be protected.

WILL start a thread if you would for donations for each specific cause say bumper stickers ,Shannon's coping the disc ,posters and so forth would be a good idea.

also i have read MIKE team old school talk about how the fishing has changed so many more black tips and spinners know than he ever saw ..but all the duskys and sawtooths and so forth u never see any more maybe there is no big tigers and hammers to keep there numbers down ..??WHAT sharks are more in danger than the others ''and yes i know all of them"" but what sharks are the main catch of the long lines i would guess blues and white tips in the deeper water with the long lines but it would very interesting to know what the catch ratio is

i will stop at the fish house close to my work and try to find out what sharks are coming to there scales that is the fish house that mike and Juno cris was talking about this winter when the guys were using the bout gear on the beach but there is also long line boats there to i will see what i can come up with

moderation is good guys don't go completely anti shark kill!! one every once in a while is just fine and i don't think a couple spinners are going to hurt there numbers a bit but a hammer, tiger or bull is a different story

BUT the biggest thing we have to do in our sport is to stay together as a group every body try to get along and stop all of the arguing over when a person does decide to keep a fish its there right..and if a person is 100% release that is o.k. to. this sport is like RELIGON EVERY BODY HAS THERE IDEA OF WHAT IS RIGHT but they need to understand there thinking is not everybody's thinking and RESPECT THAT!!! and if you have nothing NICE TO SAY DONT SAY ANYTHING AT ALL..remember those words when we were kids???

this is a good thread and i will help with it as much as i can

Yep. I have no problem with someone taking a Shark for table fair ( especially Black Tips ) or even a dream catch, but when you see people Kill a Shark just so that they can feel macho and flex there muscles, that when I think it's wrong.

I agree guys, my wife and I are expecting our first child, a boy and I said to her that I hope that there will be sharks left for him in his time so I can teach him how to fish for them one day.I am glad that Australia, South Africa and the United States have afforded shark protection for great whites, but great whites alone are not enough. All endangered shark species should be afforded the same protection! I am part asian and I despised the finning of sharks for their fins for soup. They think it gives them spiritual strength and it's an aphrodisiac is all Bullshit!!! In all my years of sharkin, I have only taken one black tip shark.I have not joined this club yet but I like what William Fundora advocates. Just my .02 cents!

Bullsh$$t is right. An aphrodisiac to me is a chick in a G String, not freakin Shark Fin soup. Another species that has seen it's numbers decline is the Sandbar Shark. If you talk to the old timers they will tell you that back in the day during winter time they would catch a lot of Sandbar Sharks from the Beach on the East Coast. Now you don't seem to catch many, although this past year the West Coast produced a decent number of them.

the first shark i caught i killed because it was a accomplishment for me and i needed some meat. no part of the shark went to waste othr then the guts. when we are fishing we will ask every one there if they want any and if its only like one person we wont kill it we will throw it back.

Monoxide there is nothing wrong with that my man!!! Actually i have no problem with any fisherman who uses a rod, killing sharks at all, unless there killing 40 plus a year, than they are not even a speck of sand in the conversation with long liners!!! one of the problems is rod and reel fisherman attacking each other, instead of using that same anger and enthusiasm against the real problem which is long liners!!! when it comes to long liners only a select few are after them and that needs to change!!!!
