Marine Sciene phd Denis Frazel takes on the hammer/tiger ban
I hope everyone has had an oppertunity to weigh in
on this and sent in emails or signed the petition.
Monday is a holiday so remember that if your sending
Denis any petitions or emailing comments to the
FWC you need to get her done. If I'm not mistaken the
meeting is Wednesday in Naples. If you live in the area
and can attend thats even better.
If anyone has signed petititions for me, please scan and send to frazelinc@gmail.com. ASAP. OR let me know if you have mailed something to me.
FYI. The FWC meeting is Wed-Fri but the shark rule will not be discussed until Thursday.
Also, NMFS will implement a new rule on Sept. 28, for HMS permitholders, that prohibits the landing of hammerheads if they have another HMS species (billfish, tuna, sword) onboard. They DID NOT implement an outright prohibition which makes the proposed state rule inconsistent with the federal rule. This fact is another primme oppoortunity to comment to the FWC commission.
Denis Frazel
I have requested a copy of the petition. I'll be honest i'm not against the ban for Commercial Fishermen as they are the ones that deplete the stocks of such fish. However, I am completely against the Recreational ban. I think it would be ridiculous if a recreational fisherman could not keep a Hammer or Tiger if he /she so desires. I mean how many dHammers / Tigers do recreational fishermen get per year in Florida? The recreational fishermen do not deplete the stocks of these fish. Fish stocks are depleted by commercial fishermen / longliners etc. And most depletions take place outside of Florida.
I would also be ok if they limited the Commercial Fleets to one per vessel per day as opposed to two per vessel. Again, I just think we the recreational anglers should not be paying a price for the actions of others. The commercial fishermen and longliners are the ones that need have their priveledges reduced as they are the ones depleting the oceans. And again most of this takes place outside of Florida. Let me not even get started with the other countries and their corrupt governments that thrive financially by implementing regulations only to approve a select few to go out and fish commercially as long as the government receives large portions of the profits. Corruption at it's finest!
