That Is The Most INSANE CONVICTION I EVER HEARD OF !!! How Can They Say Just Because You Have A Big Game Reel In A Area That Has Whites That You Must Be Targeting Them ? Wait Until They Deploy That Shark Net & Lets See What Kind Of Kill Rate It Has !!! How Can One Organization Have The Right To Kill Whites & A Common Angler Have No Rights, Even If He Was Fishing For Whites ? :x

in a way im actually glad to see another country taking a stand for sharks. unfortunate how the conviction came about but its gotta start somewhere.

This article leaves some very important details out. When this first happened I remember reading the account of a scientist who was the one to report it to the authorities. He was there when they hauled the shark out and told them it was a protected species and had to be put back in the water. They didn't listen to him, instead taking photos and leaving it in the rocks even until the authorities got there.

And JPSHARK38 they are saying that fishing with large equipment should mean you have a chance at catching a great white. It is not illegal to fish with it (yet).

Because this guy ignored a scientists warning and knew it was a protected shark even before the authorities got there I agree with the punishment. (Maybe not jail time though)

I agree that for once another country is doing something about shark conservation. They might be possibly just making an example out of this guy to others.

My question is if you do hook a white from shore, what do you have to do?
I know you can't land it. But can you pull it into shallow water to retreats your hook then release it?
Or are you suppose to cut your line when you realize what it is?

Should He Have Hauled It Out Onto The Rocks ?...NO ! Should He Have Gave The Thumbs Up After For The Cameras And Boust ?...NO ! But Its Still A Matter Of How Much Are They Taking Away From Recreational Fisherman, I'm All For Conservation To Ensure Shark Species But Its The Feat That Makes Us As Sharkfisherman "Do What We Do" And To Go Through The Entire Process Of Trail & Process For A Conviction, To Call Research Scientists Against This Guy,... INSANE !!!  :x

i believe you are supposed to cut the line as soon as you recognize the shark. which, lets be honest, anyone thats put a bait out knows what a great white looks like.

i think most important is that this shark is a juvenile. an adult white in SA would spool you without ever knowing it even had a hook in its mouth. it seems to me with the scientists testifying in the case that the juveniles might spend more time close to shore to avoid the larger sharks in the open water and they want to quickly curtail any ideas of becoming a destination for folks to catch whites "on accident" as to preserve the juvenile shark population. which, i for one, am totally for. it would be cool to catch a white but for some reason theyre the one species that i dont feel the need to hook. some may not agree but i think that, unfortunately, these are some of the concessions our community is going to have to make to ensure that in the long run we will still have sharks and the right to fish for them.

If I was to throw a huge tuna head out on a 16/0 here in California, it would be pretty obvious what I am trying to do
