hell,
you should of asked for intructions when you brought the gear, hell i would of told you for free, just joking, take a 5-6 sinker.no hook or leader,go to peer practice letting it go strait down and getting the feel for what is loose and what is tight, when you get the hang of it then practice casting not far but medium strenght,as you get better increase the power in the wip stage of the cast.do nothing but practice without bait.don't go to fish but to practice.you will get better faster.once you get the right wip-thumb pressure established and you feel you reached you're limit(and you will) becuase it is inherited(the longer the rod the more wip it will have).I.E. longer is better, but the principle is the same,wip-thumb pressure.anyway then try using bait, the trick to not casting the bait of is,when you rock the bait back to wip-it forward,MAKE SURE the line from the tip of the rod to the tail of the bait(if you hook it in the nose) is in a strait line no slack what-so ever. you will never loose you're bait and will see it take off like the space shuttle. Now for the one and only RULE-keep the reel WET or you wont last 2 cast.wet-it,wet-it,wet-it,wet-it.get the drift, don't and you will smell you're thumb burning.good luck.

once you learn to cast it then you can "east coast it" as we call it. thats when we take our bait and all that and go to the other side of the pier drop it over the side a little rock it back and forth like a normal cast and fling it across the pier. to me and a few others it seems like it goes farther with less effort. once u can cast like that you will be great.
