Shredded 1000lb cable -Cable or #19 Wire?
Hey guys, when i was down in florida last summer i hooked into a monster. I was using 1000lb stainless steel coated cable and this is what happened about 20 seconds after i set the hook. The shark took over 3 feet of cable and a 16/0 J hook. In hind sight, i wish i was using #19 single strand but its a lesson learned the hard way. What do you guys think did this?

I think it was a BIG TIGER...
Matt
My guess is A Tiger Shark, due to their power and serated teeth, Or a Hammerhead Shark due to their power and the fact that they naturally swing their head from side to side as they swim, therefore grinding down your cable one strand at a time. I have had this happen several times now and I now use #19 piano wire with no compaints.
We need a bigger hammer!
The shape of the tigers teeth is made to shredd tough prey such as logger head turtles,,,,,,,they get that thick cable in between those serrated teeth grind a few times and they got you.It won't happen like that every time but from our expierience it happens alot more with the cable and almost never with the #19 or #22 wire.Read Mundus's work he used multi strands of 19 when targetting the big great whites,,,,,,,no one knew better then him.Good luck Matt.

I vote tiger also. I have found in the recent past that the galvanized steel cable is much tougher than the stainless. I have noticed the stainless will have small freys after just one fish. The galvanized stuff does not get the freys, even after beeing kinked. I use 1/16 on the small stuf and 3/32 on the big stuf. I also brade with no crimps. Never had a problem with cable until i started useing SS. The ss is just softer i think. The old style shark hooks come with a piece of small chain. That chain is flexiable and easy to tie into the bait. The old timers cut the vergin timber and figured out hoe to catch the monsters. Look at Walter Maxwell's pics and notice the chain. If ya useing circle hooks the hook is usually at the edge of the fishes mouth and it isn't biting the leader. I use 19 wire to make the second hook. The short span doesn't kink as bad and the cable takes the twist for the wire. Really the best is 1/16 galvanized cable with the cheater ran with 19 wire. It's light and cheap and works well.
