New leader rigging idea for me..advice!
So I have quite a bit of left over cable that came on my 9/0 when I got it...not sure the strength but I'd guess between 100-150lb. Anyway I know for the bigger sharks and certain types you need some stronger stuff for those teeth! I was thinking of using this left over cable as my main leader for 8ft or so crimped to a 350-400lb snap swivel and then hook that to about a 3 ft bite leader of like 400lb cable.. It would also make it easier for me when I want to change bite leaders from J's to Circles and I also just made a bait needle and for rays will probably run some with double J's in the back and I would just hook both lines to the snap swivel.... Does anyone have any input or advice? Will this work or will it kick me in the butt when I do get something big?
THAT SOUNDS GOOD TO ME.
Awesome! Can't wait to test it out this weekend! I'll post an update.. Not sure if I'll have much luck. Just going to be camping off a nearshore island for a night and leaving out a few rays and hoping for a bull or big BT. ![]()
Ok well plans changed and didn't get to fish over the weekend. Weather crapped out and was raining and drizzling all weekend and we decided not to risk camping in the rain and spending the night out there so no update on my idea. I think it will work alright though.
That's a great way rigging idea! Cable will hold up a lot better than a 400 lb mono leader rubbing on who knows what out in the surf. I use about a 15-20ft section of 400lb mono crimped to a 500lb swivel which is then attached to about a 5-10 ft section of #17 or #19 wire, I haven't had any hook ups yet, but it seems like something that can handle most sharks, but probably not a monster

Well I can now say it has worked once at least on a 6ft sandbar. I have read many posts and talked to some people that use the mono as a rub section and since I'm poor/cheap and don't want to buy extra stuff I think for my new 12/0 I will make a couple rigs with my light cable being about 15-20ft to a little bit longer 4-5ft bite leader. This way I use stuff I have and it will most likely out-do a very heavy mono rub section.
I think you're rig will work for almost everything except the king kong we all want to catch haha. I have seen some people using up to 1200lb mono rub sections.....seems a bit excessive but IDK...still learning here lol. ![]()

Haha I feel you man, the only reason I even went with that rub section was because I was given 100 yard bundle of 400lb mono to use as jewfish leader, but I decided to put it to better use! I'm just trying to be able to land some nice sharks, not looking for king kong just yet ![]()
