Ive seen these used before & have tried something similar for sharking beaches or fast currents in passes. These "spider weights" work great in the surf. Very easy to make if you know how to work with lead..good post!

I use the mouse trap shark leader except I attach the spider weight on a snap swivel...the snap swivel is then allowed to slide on the mono shock leader for about 10 feet. Basically this gives the shark more distance to run with your bait without feeling any pressure. Also, I bought spider weights from a guy on the extremecoast forums..You can certainly pour your own but for only $3.50 per weight I rather just buy them and not go through the hassle of gathering materials and making it. Plus you don't rig them as a breakaway so they last forever (as long as you don't get cut off).

On my coast (west) I can get away with using just the 5oz weights as the surf is usually pretty calm. Five ounces isn't heavy at all, the copper legs are what really holds the bait in the sand. Just angle the legs a little less than 90 degrees and it will dig into the sand pretty good. Spider weights are just an alternative to the breakaway brick method. The brick has the advantage of getting cut off so it's just you vs. the fish, while the spider weight will be on your line the whole fight. The spider weight has the advantage in that if you get a hit and the shark misses the hook, your weight is still there to hold your bait down if the shark decides to come back. It's all preference..I've used both and lately just been using the spider weight because it's quicker to rig than a brick and a lot lighter.

The two in the middle are 5oz, two on the right are 11oz, and the two on the left suck because the copper legs are too stiff.
