How do make your leader?
I'm curious to see how y'all make your leaders with single strand specifically, but also with cable. For medium sharks I use 20' of 400lb mono then 5 feet of cable right now it's the 7 strand leader tec 1000lb (very thin). For the big boys I use a wind on so I have 75' of 400 lb mono and 20' of 3/16 cable, then I put a loop on the end to and hook drops. I have one leader made with 3/8 ![]()
That is way more than you need.We dont use cable. We just use #19 wire that runs about 10' into the stinger rig(two hooks). That attches to our main line witch is a double line for about 10' as well. What you are useing will eork but will cost you more than just wire.As well as keep you from getting a igfa record.
NO double line no cable no clams none of that!!!!
I go 8ft- 15(for hammers) of number 19 wire with a smooth haywire, and a single rap then 6 or more barrels.VIP if you go tight from your haywire str8 into your barrel you will kink it right were they6 meet during battles!!! happend to me atleast 3 tymes till i learned

1ain my opinion the double line can only go so deep into your real, and eventualy the length will be taken out past that reef in battle and rubbing on your str8 line. killing the whole point of the double line.
2bthe double line can have a weak point due to the twists and end knot after coming in and out of your guides so many times due to it being thicker than the original line.
3b you have to know how to tie a realy good double line for example a bimini twist, if not your end knot will never hold as strong as a regular fishermans knot.
However this is how i feel and whatever helps you out more for your style fishing is what you should go with.
See you on long key fellas great wheather!!!! bring some tourists to enter so theres a bigger prize!!!

Just bumping this interesting post. I always love to hear about your leader designs. Only two have given input anyone else?
I always like to keep in mind that the longer your wire the more likely it is to kink. I usually run a windon in lieu of the double, although a short double is tied in order to connect the windon to the running line via cross-loop connection. #19 or 21 wire, 5-7ft in general.
I use 20' 3/32galvanised cable sometimes plastic coated. I braid a loop and put one or two hooks in the same loop one16 one12 the 12 keeps the bait from sliding up the leader. Some baits I use one hook rig like a bonita or a tail section because I tie a zipstrip over the halh hitch around the tail. One hook is threaded eaiser and hid eaiser. A head bait needs 2 hooks and a ziptie. A weighted swivel ads to the weight of the wire and makes the bait hold.better in the current. It also makes the line sink when a hooked fish swims a circle. The length depends on the height of the pier ya fishing, probaly at least 2' longer than the pier is high so a clip roap can be used. The plastic coated stuf is easy on the hands but needs to be striped about 6' up from the hook. Learning to braid is the trick.
