running man, most effective, and most fun
nothing like hitting the brick wall when your hook catches.

nothing like flying backwards when that brick wall you hit moves too fast for you to turn around

Just an average fisherman.

Running man is always effective, but bridge fishing i was taught to put your reel in free spool let him eat, tighten your star, slam the reel back into gear, reel as much as you can and set up.

i never did the running man from a beach. but i only fish a 9/0. i just free spool it let it eat and then slam it in gear and set up like your setting hook on a snook just harder and alot more.

I don't do the running man... unless Im catching btips in front of tourists 8-) Haha I I use J's and I just put the reel in gear, and give it a pump. I have caught bulls to 7', and too many btips to count, using this technique

Let him eat... a long time dont rush I've missed sharks when the take off 50+ yards of line eating.let him eat eat and eat. Throw it in gear let it get nice and tight and nail him 3 or 4 times. maybe once more for good luck. then hold on because hes going to be pissed.

I've done the running man on bass one time..

very old post i know sorry. but im reading up and i wanna get this concept down before my first shark hook up.

so basically the baits out and the real is set to 5lb drag. when it start screaming, switch it to free spool. tighen the star down and then slam into gear??? is that how its done? how much do i set it to? say 15 pounds?

I'm doing just the same thing, reading & re-reading all the threads , there's alot here tosee

Geez ,what I can't get over is how I did this same kind of set up ,on my own, nobody telling me to , when I started fishing for the big boys , it just seemed to make sense , doing that,

Granted, we're fishing BIG baits ,so it most likely takes the Shark a few minutes to swallow it , but it seems to be the thing to do , Sock IT to 'em , when you feel all that pull when they run with it , it takes some willpower to wait

They do get PO'd when that hook hits them
They go off when they realize they didn't grab a real baitfish too , when I cast those BIG Rat-L-Traps right at a feeding Shark & they hit it as soon as it touches down , sometimes they don't budge, then when I start reeling & set the hooks when I feel them ,they take off like a shot

Your situation should be the determining factor in how you set hook. If the shark is close to you, then you should be able to bury a circle or J easily without the running man.

When you're running baits out several hundred yards away your line tends to get slack in it. If you are fishing braid or dacron you can still bury a hook pretty good in a shark without doing the running man but at that distance I still recommend it.

If you're fishing monofilament you should realize the stretch and large amount of slack in your line when your bait is out far... if you ever grabbed a regular fishing rod and pulled line out while somebody is holding it, that person on the rod end may feel like the line is near popping pressure while the person on the end of the line barely feels anything, with this in mind I tend to lock down my drag when I set hook and back off of the fish when it starts running.

If you're fishing circle hooks you will simply run with your rod, but fishing J hooks you may also want to pump that barb into the fish while you're running.

One tip I can give no matter how you like to set the hook, is to make sure that that shark is hooked well... with locked drag I set on that fish 3-10 times until it starts pulling me, after it ran some drag I'll set up again 2-5 times and even in the middle of the fight I'll give that rod a few pumps just as assurance. I do this because one of the worst things to me is fighting a shark for a long time and then having the hooks pull; you just wasted all of that energy for nothing!

I find circle hooks easier to use and safer for the sharks if they are used properly and set into the bait correctly. But being a land-based fishermen is part of what I consider a challenge so I have more fun practicing my skills with J hooks and to this day I've never gut hooked a shark with J's :)

I fish both circles and J's, braid, spectra, dacron and mono, and I am adept to all platforms of fishing, I don't have an incredible catch ratio but I rarely have a failure in my hook set.

Just an average fisherman.

I have been fishing circles, letting them take the bait for a little while in free spool and then engaging the gear (with a preset tight drag).

I am missing hook sets. I had some baits dropped and a hook spit.

How long should I let them eat the bait? Any other suggestions?
