The ray in the pic soaked from 6:00pm to 9:00 am. The bonita was put out late at 11:00pm and sit to7:00am. The bonita was gone in 3 hours but the ray was still good when i reeled it in. The bonita was nothing but bone and the ray left a blood trail in the sand when i reeled it up. The bonita weighed almost 10 lbs, a bigun and i used it whole and put as few holes as i could as i threaded it. the ray was cut in half down the center. I did get a short run on the bobo and nothing on the ray, but that was one night.

Nice post Ernie Thanks!!We need more post like this that educate the sharkers with not just words but pictures that demonstrate what is written. No doubt about it a ray whether used whole or a section will outlast any other bait .The big fish heads such as Amberjack,Cuda,Grouper etc,etc hold up pretty good also but the ray retains blood better.

I have been putting a ray sometimes 2 in the line up with bobos aj's jackcrevell. The ray lasts longer but while the bonita or the other fishes is still good, the fishes are more likley to get found first. The ray locks the blood up because it is tough. It takes crabs eating at it to make it bleed. I love using rays because after all the other fish has been torn off the hook the ray is still there. That reason makes it worth while even when the crabs are not in. ya put a ray out and more than likley ya gona reel substantial bait back in at the end of the night. I hate the idea of sitting there with no bait on the hook and putting a ray in the line up usually solves that problem. When the crabs are bad rays are the only way.

Using Ray for bait has paid off big dividends for me both my biggest sharks (my 13 ft 8 inch Hammer in 1989 and my 13 foot Tiger in 2007 were caught on ray.If you check out my youtube video of the battle w the 13 foot tiger you'll see the slab of ray coming up on the line towards the end of the fight.I have lost submarine size sharks that I could not get on top of fast enough in the Bahamas and always the best bait over there is Ray.We used to snag eagle rays in the harbour every April back in the 80's but now they are endangered and we bring over our own supply of American or Bat ray for bait.
