I like using this type of snell knot on heavy mono: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Gp56i4UfCE ...notice that the finishing knot is underneath the wraps? I use this knot for 2 years and never ever failed on me, not even once. Hooks would bend or brake in extreme situation, but never the knot. 6-7 wraps are enough.
The best way to test that knot at 300-400lb is to tie it to a tree, then in the back of a car (use crimps to make the loop) or bimini knot - then accelerate. I'm sure either the line - inline - or the hook will fail - not the knot.
I'm pretty sure the uni knot is more than 60%, but even at 60% (240lbs) strength, 400lb test is stronger than my mainline and about 3 times the abrasion resistance. The only problem with the snell knot is that it is useless for tying on swivels. To improve your knot (if done properly) you can put a loop around the hook eye or swivel piece then attempt your favorite knot, if done wrong the line will suffocate itself and cut off (this will be about 10% of the line strength and you can pop it easily with a good tug). If done properly then your knot strength will increase dramatically, it will be tough to cinch down... If your the master you can do this loop with the double line (a variation of the knot demonstrated by capt. Ben) and this knot will be insane.
Another option, if you think your strong... create a double line with the 400lb test using a bimini twist or spider hitch <--- more likely to tie. Then do your knot to your swivel/hook. Trust me a bimini with 130lb test is tough enough as it is... good luck.
Another amazing knot is the rapala knot.
I put my new 130lb test bullbuster to maximum pressure (I have popped brand new 130) and never once have I had a knot failure. The knots I trust are: uni, bimini, spider hitch, rapala, sebile, and a modified alberto knot.
Just an average fisherman.
San diego jam knot..I tie 500 lb mono to my swivel with it and its strong, pretty, and cinches down perfect with the heaviest line you can tie, if you tie it right and eat your spinach every day. Won't crack the mono like the knot in the video up top (unless you fish crap leader material).
