What would you do?
Alright, so what would you guys do if you dropped off 4 reels to be cleaned and serviced, a oldschool Stradic 6000, a Diawa Black gold, and TWO Oldschool Stradic 4000's. The Stradic 6000 took 3 weeks to finish and they never called me to let me know it was done, I eventually called to see what was up. Said "yeah, the 6000 is done looking for parts for the other 3" after they told me they have no problem finding parts.
Then 2 weeks later I call, still looking for parts. Then a week later I get impatient and call and they say my Stradic 4000 is done. So I go in there and they give me one. I said wheres the other one? theres two. They look around and say, "oh yeah, we had to cannibalize one to fix the other." I said WHY? THEY BOTH WORKED WHEN I BROUGHT EM IN?! They said they both needed repairs so they just used one to fix the other! So I say whatever so I didnt flip out. What about the BG60? "Still looking for parts". A MONTH LATER I CALL AND SAY I WANT MY REEL DONE OR NOT. And they tell me its done and to come on in. So I pick it up and ask about my 2nd Stradic 4000 and the guy gets pissy and looks around for it and comes up with a tray of Stradic parts and dumps it in a ziplock and says "Idk why you want it, cant find parts". I told him I have another and maybe I'll reassemble it myself. He says "Yeah, I doubt it." So Im about to flip out on this guy but I just say to myself he aint worth it, I don't need another stay at the V.A. hospital for flipping out over an idiot and pulling him across a desk.
P.S. DONT EVER DROP OFF REELS WITH BETT'S ON STARKEY RD IN LARGO! Theyre rude overpriced A$$holes who charge you for wrecking your reel to fix another. Then wanted to keep my parts.
WOW what a bummer!!!Sounds like they were totally NEGLIGENT, DISHONEST and i personally would file a complaint in court to get your money for the reels they cannabalized/destroyed without your consent .Them guys are CROOKS in my book.Hard not to get an assault charge when crap like that happens.

This is why it's a good idea to learn to service your own gear. You can practice with old reels you no longer use, break em down and get an idea of what you are dealing with. Spinning reels can be a b**** though. If necessary find a reputable shop to work on your reels (i am lucky, Lehrs in fort myers is great and charge very little for labor) but do not under any circumstance take them into a commercial chain such as trash pro shops and the like..they struggle to even correctly spool reels with line let alone break down and repair reels. As for what I would have done, I'd have given them a stern talking to, get my money back, never do business there again, and tell everyone I come across to do the same. Good luck getting those reels fishin again.
First Of All Thank You For Showing Real Sanity When That Jerk Gave You A Bag Of Parts, And Lip To Go Along With It. Me Along With A Whole Lot Of Club Guys Would Beat That Jerk To A Inch Of His Life. Now The Best Action Is To Conact A Lawyer And Take Him To Court, You Can Also File A Complaint With The Dept. Of Better Business Beru Which Handles These Types Of Complaints. Also Post Flyers Around The Area, Odds Are People Will Read Them And The Word Will Get Out. Just Observe The Local Litter Laws. The Best Way Is Fight Fire With Fire. ![]()
Unless the service guy is the owner I would start off by talking to the owner and seeing about getting compensation. If the owner doesnt listen go to dept. of better business buro or one of those local news stations and see if they will air your problem with the store. I've heard about some commercial guys a few years back that were screwed over by a business and dumped a huge haul of rotten stinky mullet in the parking lot of the business as paybacks. I'm amazed what happened to you happened because I've never heard anything bad before about Bett's.

Same here, Bett's has always been good to me. Definitely will keep this incident in mind before I go there again though. I have a hard time taking my reels to the shop anymore anyway. They never do things up to par with my standards and charge too much for it. Last time I took a stradic in for repair, guy said he couldn't pinpoint what the problem was, and went ahead and ordered parts for it without disassembling it and only turning the handle a few times. Got it back $40 later, and it still reels rough as hell. And ditto to whoever made the comment about bass pro. I recently brought a penn 750 spool into bass pro, bought a bulk spool of 50lb braid, and ask the reel dept. guy to use as short a mono backing as possible, and pack as much of the braid as he could on it, all the way to the spool lip. Came back, and the line was almost a quarter inch away from the spool lip. I asked the guy about it, and he began to lecture me about how reels are unfishable when you fill them up that much, and that you can only fill them to 1/8 to 1/4 from the spool or all the line will fall of, and he said I'd thank him later. I was so pissed. I had just bought a spool of line and this guy had just ruined it. Later, when I took off the line to fill it the right way myself (like I should have done at first) I found out he had put a good 150yards of 20lb backing on under the braid. He made it completely unfishable for anything I wanted to use it for.

Yup that sounds about right, they do crap like that to pinch a few pennies..typical corporate BS. Back in 2010 I have a friend who took a new reel in to get spooled up with braid and it was slipping over the spool, no drag. He was getting dumped by a 5 ft Blacktip lol..I had to wrap my t shirt over my hand and hand line the fish while he cranked. He had the reel spooled at Dick's. Needless to say, He got totally f---ed haha.
I've pretty much just let it go. Just pissed me off because I've had that Stradic 4000 since high school, since like 99 or 2000. I pretty much used that one for everything light tackle since from Snook, Reds, Trout to Bass. I used it for flounder and Reds in NC while stationed on Camp Lejeune and landed a 10lb Bass on it the day before I turned it in for service. I have other Stradic's but that ONE was kinda like my "go to" Stradic on my custom 9ft "Key Largo" Bonefish/trout rod. Im not gonna seek legal action or go to the local news stations, or raise hell in there (Cant deal with anymore anger management meetings
). But I do feel they kinda owe me a reel. They shoulda at least called me beforehand. I am going to learn to service my own reels now or take them to Ricks Rods on Mad Beach, Ricks a good dude and wouldn't pull crap like that. What I am going to do is not spend another dime in there and let "the boys" know what kinda B.S. they pull there and advise all who ask to go elsewhere. Bett's is overpriced anyway and they treat you like crap unless you're dropping a ton of cash. Last time I was in there I said I've my eye on the Harrington 555 and the dude says "Yeah, you and everyone else." And rolls his eyes. It wont sell because they want $700 bucks last time I checked! Acted like Id never be able to afford it or some crap. Not gonna pay $700 plus for it. Horrible "rainbow multi colored" wraps anyway. I just want the blank. Id just rather send business Ricks way or Indian Rocks Tackle or hell, even Dogfish! They befriended my GF on Facebook, I plan on telling my story on their Facebook page and posting a pic of my gallon ziplock bag full of Stradic parts and the fact it took them over 2 months to service 4 reels, 3 of which I got back working.
