What kind of kayak should I buy? I am looking for a kayak that will handle the rough surf to take baits out but something I can fish out of also I had a emotion spitfire but sold it last year due to my injury I loved it but i want something bigger, I am thinking around 10-12 ft I am considering Ocean kayaks,Cobra kayak's and Hobie kayaks but not sure what models yet. I want to have a higher weight capacity like 400lbs so any one I fish with can use the kayak also but at the same time I don't want to pay to much either.

I have an emotion temptation 10' I love it, it has a 350lb capacity. I paid 3 for it used and for another $50 you can outfit to match the angler version. Its as wide as the longer yaks without the exttra weight, and real easy to jump right into when you have to take it out a ways on rough days. Only problem is finding one, I got mine from a rental place, and it had only been used a few times got lucky I guess.

I had an ocean kayak malibu 2 it's a 12ft. tandem and I loved it. they handle rough surf well and have plenty of room for your gear ( if you buy a yak you are going to eventually want to do more than run bait with it). if this is your first yak please allow me to make a few suggestions
1. Your arms and your paddle are your motor a higher end paddle is well worth the expense trust me.

2. sit-on-top kayaks are notorously uncomfortable for long periods of paddling an upgaded seat with good back support is a nesessity.

3. a v hull is faster and a little easier to paddle while a double or trip hull is stable enough to allow you to stand and fish but they require alot more efffort to paddle (this sucks dragging out alot of line to drop a bait a long way off the beach)

4. if you buy a used yak make sure you check the hull for u.v. damage and cracks around the scupper holes.

5. Craigslist is a great place to look for yaks I've used it to by several myself alot of times you can find a barely used yak for cheap because people buy them and decide kayaking is alot more work than it looks.

6. Buy some kind of P.F.D (life vest) SAFETY FISRT! Im a former Navy SAR swimmer and I wear one so you can too tough guys. :D

You mean you borrow a prowler 13 lol I would def recommend something in the 13 range from the sounds of it though you dont want to drop a grand on something your not going to use constantly. Thats why I opted for the 10' I like to fish from it but rarely do just didnt justify the extra expense.
