What are you using for a Breakaway?
Gday Guys
After some general ideas on what people are using to hold there baits off the Beach? We are currently using Bricks but when sending out a few lines from the beach can be a handful carting down bricks aswell as spares. Looking for something thats nice and compact but will still hold a 3 to 5lb bait to the bottom with a bit of current.
Suggestions and photos would be very helpful.
Thanks in advanced.
I rarely use a break away, but when I first got into this a buddy of mine showed me a nice way to make weights cheaply. Take a twelve ounce beer can and cut the top off. Next bend some aluminum wire into the shape of a W but let the center bend higher than the outside points. Now fill with concrete insert the wire to tie to and let it cure. Once it's cured out just peel off the can and your left with a nice smooth slug of concrete. I know this sounds like alot of work but a twelve pack and a good buddy can make it happen pretty quick. Hope this helps
you could use a brown paper grocery bag and fill it with sand if you want it to last a while before breaking away use double or triple bag its bio degradable so you need not be concerned with polluting I have tried it in the past it seems to work good you'll need some practice on how many bags to use vs how rough it is how much current there is
I collected up a bunch of wheel weights (you might get a garage to guve u the used ones if u ask nice) and melted them in a dollar store 8" skillet over a fish fry burner. Then used scrap of emt cut into 3" to 8" lengths and some copper wire leftover from house remodel project to make my own version of spider weights. The different lengths give u different weight depending on what u need at that time. Cost next to nothing. Sometimes i let weight slide of line like a fishfinder rig and sometimes i tie it to swivel with a little piece of 10 or 20 lb mono so it pops off. Dont mind losing them since i dont fish alot and they didnt really cost anything
What's your bottom like? Are you using a breakaway attached to the hook to keep your mainline off the reef or is it sandy and you connect to the leader?
A good biodegradable breakaway is a burlap sand bag or cotton sand bag. They will be gone in several months and promote algae growth.
If your droping on sand just use a sand anchors. 6 gauge copper wire twisted into a 4 prong claw and then tape it to your line so when you tighten up it pulls the claws into the sand.
