WEEDLESS SHARK HOOKS?!

Ok, I may be nuts but Ive accepted a challenge. Anyone ever tried the concept of weedless shark hooks? Or seen them before? Or heard of such a thing? Net searches come up with nothing. Here is a prototype  I intend to fish it next trip out! Made a few smaller ones too just for the hell of it. This is a quick version, I plan on using heat shrink tubing if I can catch a fish on this thing.

i like the concept but not sure if it would be worth it. i feel that the weedless hook wouldnt work i guess you could say maybe if the area you fish has alot of sea weed maybe but i think the wire would still bend if enough got on it.

let me know how they work out. if they work you have to patent it so owner and mustad can send you checks

One of the guys complained that his hooks dig in and drag the sand like a "plow" type anchor upon retrieval and get hung up on sea fans and crap. So I said Id figure something out. This was my first idea to prevent that. I can go heavier or lighter wire to adjust the tension or bend it up more or less but I have quite a bit of testing to do to see if there is any benefit to them. So far Ive just dragged em round my livingroom  Didnt snag up my carpet, couch or chair legs, or anything in my livingroom!

I've always thought about weedless shark hooks, to improve your design... the double strand you have there is more likely to catch weeds than a single strand; make a haywire twist that will hold the barb of your hook so you can go down to single strand. Make sure the loop is big enough so that the hook point will still be on the inside of the curve. Also, to save money on heat shrink or tape or anything in that manner, also sharks will bite through that stuff... try a method of wrapping the wire onto your hook.

Concept...

Just something I threw together in 5 minutes... the hardest part was getting a good wrap around the eye and shaft of the hook, if that is perfected then the rest would be a piece of cake.

Edit: I just did a tight haywire around the shaft of the hook, it holds decent, maybe some modifications along those lines would have a stable piece of wire on there. Cause bent wire under pressure just spirals back to attempt to meet it's original pose.

Just an average fisherman.

Interesting point Slasher, but at this point I really like how the large loop of wire springs free and out of the way when it needs to but stays tight till then. I'll play with a single loop for a bit and see what comes out of it. I just used electrical tape due to having a bunch on hand. I was thinking of using a metal sleeve to attach the wire to the shank but gotta make sure these things actually work before I get too crazy into materials. I also don't really know where I'm going with this. Just build em for fun and share with the guys? Patent and sell online? Was just a goofy idea I'm toying with that just turned into "Hey, that might actually work!".

Imagine a shark getting a spring loaded piece of wire to the face... that might scare it a little  you gotta remember how real weedless hooks function.

These are just a GIANT modified version based off of existing bass hooks used for fishing live shiners in heavy lillypads, or wacky worms in heavy cover. They're not gonna like spring open and pop a fish in the snout or something  Works like a carbiner like I use for rappelling or like alot of people put their keys on. Same concept. http://www.overtons.com/assets/images/products/large/411972_L1.jp g" target="_blank">http://www.overtons.com/assets/images/products/large/411972_L1.jp g"/> &w=450&h=450&ei=UlrmT72QOoui8ATZn7WSAQ&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=940&vpy=102&dur=1182&hovh=225&hovw=225&tx=96&ty=120&sig=108917523336458001917&page=2&tbnh=138&tbnw=143&start=18&ndsp=25&ved=1t:429,r:17,s:18,i:186"> http://www.google.com/imgres?q=weedless ... s:18,i:186 http://bassfishing-gurus.com/img/weedless-hook.jp g" target="_blank">http://bassfishing-gurus.com/img/weedless-hook.jp g"/> &w=265&h=238&ei=UlrmT72QOoui8ATZn7WSAQ&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=302&vpy=172&dur=3679&hovh=190&hovw=212&tx=120&ty=91&sig=108917523336458001917&page=3&tbnh=145&tbnw=163&start=43&ndsp=24&ved=1t:429,r:1,s:43,i:216"> http://www.google.com/imgres?q=weedless ... s:43,i:216

Maybe this isn't ass effective but I like the single strand weedless type better.

and they make a double without the loop.

For shark fishing the application would be a little different considering baits move in under current after you drop them and some baits are big enough to take the loop off the shank possibly. That's why I've always wondered about weedless shark hooks but never bothered with them.

Slasher, you're exactly right. These things may be a total waste of time  Thats why Im just kinda toying with the idea. Was just kinda something to do and mess around with while Im stuck in the house. It would be cool if they work, be even cooler if I could make a few bucks on the idea, then I could AFFORD gas to hit the sand more often :D. Hell, I bet I could sell a few on Ebay to "Yahoo's, Googans, and Tourists" whether they work or not!. (I wouldnt do it) but still. Those guys hit the pier with a bag full of 1ft pre-made steel leaders with red beads and cheap snaps and crappy crimps all over em! Wondering why they arent catching any Snook dropping a 3oz pyramid and squid right on top of their heads. Ya know?

If you send some to me I will offer up my time and effort to try these hooks out. Free hooks are always a plus

 I hear ya bro! Im thinking about making up a bunch out of some mustads I have a bunch of. I'll let ya know when I make a bunch up. Im just broke as hell and not sure bout shipping costs and such. Think theres a place in the market for them? Was just a joke but now Im curious as hell. I just gotta get a bunch beach time and get them to work. Zero testing so far.

i think this is genius, always hate getting hung up. I see a problem with them though, wont a shark destroy those, the tape would peel off and the wire would get destroyed. Maybe if you could think of a way to shark proof these you may have a real effective idea that would make shark fishing a hell of a lot easier.

these ones are prototypes. its all trial and error.

ray about shipping them just get a flat rate envelope from the post office and shove them in there or a small flat rate box. they say if it fits it ships up to 70lbs.
