With a flat rock if you kayak baits out or 8oz pyramid or spider sinker if you cast.

In some areas the sharks are closer to your feet then you would think, cruising the trough or the sandbar or around the pier or next to the bridge. Other areas the sharks will be 500 yards away, it all just depends... there aren't too many people casting out shark baits for 10ft+ hammerheads... but I have seen it done; it's mainly for sharks under 8ft.

Too keep my bait snug I get an appropriate sized rock tied to heavy mono (60-130lb test) with about 3-8ft of line tied to the hook so the shark can bite it off when he gets the bait.

Just an average fisherman.

Just like Mark (slasher) said, use a rock, with like 80lb. mono with a section tied to your bait and it should break away when a shark hits it.
