any body got any tips on tarpon fishing? i want to go out and catch my first tarpon soon but idk if i have the tackle to do so. my rods and reels are a penn live liner 5600 with 65 or 75lb braid(all i had laying around) on a 8 ft penn pursute 30-50 rod, shamano speed master spooled with 15lb mono with like a 10 yard 50lb mono topshot on a custom acid wraped rod travis knows the specs on the rod, penn 6/0 on a 5'6" boat rod spooled with 50lb mono, hopefully soon my 9/0 rod will be done so i will have a 9/0 spooled with 60lb mono on a penn 9/0 rod custom build by joe on here. and a penn #155 spooled with 30lb mono not sure what rod its on. will any of these be good for land based tarpon fishing? also how should i tie my leaders and what should i use as far as what size mono what hook wire or no wire. let me know.

For tarpon i like to use a uni-uni knot to connect the main line to the leader. The less hardware the better in my opinion.

For big tarpon this time of year try the beaches near the inlets, either early morning or early evening..the end of an outgoing tide and early evening is best from what I've noticed in my limited experience..I've done best with cut pieces of bait like jack crevalle or bluefish, and other common surf species, even catfish. Another good bait this time of year is pass crabs but a big cut piece of bait usually keeps the smaller ones away from what I see. Its just that the smaller sharks usually get to it first but this is the time of year you got a shot at a nice tarpon from land they are migrating north just like the sharks. Also canals with deep water with close proximity to rivers is good, and can hold tarpon all year round in some areas.

Catching a tarpon is a very hard task, the first couple of times you might get popped off, use as little tackle as you can. Also catching tarpon on ultralight tackle is really fun. Free-lining a big baitfish like a threadfin would work. On certain bridges at night if their is lighting the tarpon will be on the shadow's edge, trolling a small white or yellow bucktail on top will appear as a shrimp. Good luck.

P.S. live mullet is the best bait ive ever used.

Just an average fisherman.
