Short Spin Rods

Anyone use a short (7') spinning rod for surf casting for sharks? I am going up to myrtle beach over the summer and won't have a surf rod with me. I have a 7' ugly stik tiger with a 50lb braid loaded penn 750. I figure I'll just wade out as far as I can and chuck it. Anyone have any success with this? I'm looking for 5' class sharks.

That's a great question. I was thinking of a similar setup for 5-6 footers.

Considering I've had blacktips practically bite me when I go to wash my hands in the first wave... I'd say you got a shot.

Just an average fisherman.

Iv'e had success casting for blacktips with an 8'ft ugly stick if thats close enough
If the tippers are there and you have decent bait they should be able to find it.

But i would do like you said and wade out as far as possible and then launch that bait.

I do it all of the time. I use a 6 foot leader.

6' 1/32 cable crimped to 350 lb swivle then about 1' from the hook I place a stopper then a 4 oz weight and then another stoper on top of the weight to hold it in place. I use an 8/0 circle hook with a nice chunk of bait.

I fished this set up on a penn sargus 6000 with 30 lb braid 7' hurricane red bone 20-40 heavy action

also avet sx 50 lb braid to 50 lb mono top shot 7' star plasma 17-40 lb . I can cast it about 30 yards
