Shark Rod and Reel setup question!
Hi everyone,
I have just bought a setup for the beach in Naples FL, to go fishing with. The setup I bought is a 9 foot medium action rod, the reel has 300 yards of 40lb braid. I was wondering if this setup would be able to handle sharks or not. If so, what type of shark would I be targeting and how should I set up the rigs for them? If not, what fish could it handle that are around Naples and what bait/ lures should I use for them. I will be fishing mainly in late December- early January. Thanks for the help everyone (if there is anyone)
You could absolutely take a shark with that setup! You won't be able to fling your bait huge distances, but you'll get it done. I don't know what your reel is capable of, but I would suggest that 5 or 6 feet is what your line should be targeting. That's bonnetheads, blacktips, finetooths, smaller reefs, bulls and lemons, PLENTY of shark this size. I would definitely use more finesse than force when fighting with lighter lines and maybe upgrade to a 50 or 65 pound braid when it's time to respool.
For terminal gear, may I suggest a 12/0 or 14/0 hook, 6 feet of cable, a 4 or 6 ounce lead weight and a 300 to 400 pound swivel. Bait it with a 6 inch long fillet and you're sharking!

What reel do you have on the rod? What is the drag capability? Should be fine for casted baits but if you plan on paddling them out I wouldn't go much further than 80-100 yds with only 300 yds of line on the reel. The time you will be mainly fishing its going to be sandbar sharks and blacktips. You should be able to handle them.

The reel is a Diawa D Wave. It was a combo that I had heard some decent reviews on. The drag I think is around 20-25 pounds. I do not plan on paddling any baits out, mainly casting from the beach. Thanks for the help! Much appreciated!!
