Satellite Tagging Hammerheads
Ever since I was a little kid I have wanted to be a Marine Biologist, more specifically I have wanted to track the migration of fish. More recently I have gained a desire to study the fascinating Hammerhead shark.
I have recentley been in contact with Pat Turner a leader at the Apex Predator Program. NOAA's shark tagging program. While they do not personally have their own satellite tags they have a partner who does. We have been talking back and forth about the possibility of pairing up a shark team and a research team to collaborate the first sucessful satellite tagging of a Great Hammerhead. While in the midst of the conversation the main issue of the whole deal came up.....funding. Each tag has a hefty price of $4000 a piece. I discussed with her that I may be able to raise some money to be able to purchase a few of these tags.
I would like to know if there are any members that would willing to make a donation to turn this dream into a reality.

Great Idea Tyler, thanks .I am impressed and grateful that you have taken the initiative for an excellent project that may be of great benefit to the Greater Hammerhead which is being considered within the next few months to be classified from 'threatened' to 'endangered' by NMFS/NOAA . The $4000 price tag of each tag makes it unlikely that we could purchase sonic tags but maybe we can find other ways to track Hammerhead movements by anglers on this site.We could start a monthly chart of Hammerheads caught and try and develop a migration study. We have alot of knowledge on big hammer movements that may benefit the scientist who study them.I personally believe that the best way to help the hammerhead population is
COMPLETELY BAN SHARK LONGLINE VESSELS FROM ALL US WATERS AND TERRITORIES.
ps,,,,,,I can make available my 27 foot openfishermen for hammerhead research by a shark scientist in south Florida if given advance notice and if I can assist in such research
