Rusting hook research.
An idea just occurred to me. It may be an expensive project but most of the time the equipment should come back to you. Whenever a shark is hooked in the corner of the jaw, place a small floating tracking device on the eye of a shark hook that you had to leave in a shark because you couldn't get it out. It will allow you to track the sharks progress and find the tracking device when the hook rusts out. Which will allow you to see what hooks rust out faster, etc. Maybe somebody on here has a small tracker laying around or something?
Just an average fisherman.
the duratin mustads take a long, long time to rust. We had an odd occurance this summer, got cut off and a month later a shark was caught with the leader section and part of the mono section still intact that it was pulling around. I easily identified the leader as mine, caught in the same spot, and the leader in question was a one of a kind for me at that time. The hook still looked like a new one after a month of being in the water in the corner of a sharks mouth.
another thing about this project is sometimes sharks do a lot of traveling, a tiger we caught and tagged in southern NC was tagged again offshore of Delaware
I killed a tiger a few years ago for the SC shark tourny and it had 6 hooks in its jaw. Some looked like surf rigs that rookies would use, a couple looked like something a kid would use off a dock. I dont think it harms the shark as long as you cut the wire so that its not long enough to reach its throat/stomach and punch holes in it.
I use Gamakatsu live bait hooks and they take a long long time to dissolve out....the good news is it never gut hook them. I use mustads for smaller fish, and as fast as mustads rust just sitting in my tackle box I'd imagine they wouldnt last a month in a jaw.
