Release from pier
If you catch a good size shark, while fishing from a pier or bridge and it is not possible to beach the fish, what would be the best way to release it alive? Cutting the line would leave a long leader/line in the fish's mouth, which is bad. Tail-roping and hoisting it up? Then how would you return the fish to the water. (Sending the shark over the rail seems to be very dangerous.) I would like to learn how.

If you can't beach it, then cut the leader off with as little line behind as possible. Make sure NOT TO USE stainless hooks for this reason.
and I feel that this is far more serious an issue than cataching one.

Just don't fish off piers without an accessible beach if you're super seriously concerned about it. Sheesh ![]()

hahaha lmfao
I've actually gone into deep thought about this and have come up with an idea... really long pliers.
Seriously though, we figure there must be someway to get a pair of pliers/wire cutters mounted on a strong pole and the other end controlled by a strong tether of some sort. Allowing you to clip off close to the shark. I figure having the shark straight up and down the pliers should be facing perpendicular to the line so the long tool would be an L shape. If somebody really put in the effort it can be done. Some people make leaders long enough and with a big enough swivel to clip a rope onto to make for easy walking down a bridge or pier.
Just an average fisherman.
On Redington Pier I used to climb down the wooden crossbracings and cut the leader, or lay across them on my stomach and unhook my fish. Likely get the cops called on you nowdays or thrown off though. I don't fish there anymore. Ive always wanted to make a "ropeladder" for unhooking Goliath and Tarpon on the Skyway but never got around to it. But Im just a crazy Jarhead. ![]()
Yea, if you catch a monster jewfish around the end of Skyway pier south, do you just cut the line? If so, the fish's gonna have many hooks/leaders hanging around its mouth sooner or later. I have seen jewfishermen working there but haven't seen one caught, so I don't know how they handle the fish.

when i jewfish i use a small 400lb leader and break it off when i need to that way its not dragging a long leader around
