Ray Gigs, Harpoons, & Trash Spikes

Has anyone made one before?
I'm thinking of having my friend weld one up for me.
I have a old harpoon tip that might work.
I'm thinking of using some metal exhaust pipe about 1 1/2 ID.
then glue on some eva foam for a grip.
drill a hole on the back end of the pipe and put rope inside it.
Then I could tie the rope to something and spear a big dog ray!

Anyone have any ideas?

I just buy my gigs at wal-mart, the heavy "fish gigs" and attach it to a mop or shovel handle. Works well for me. X2 on bowfishing em! I'll be trying to take out my new bowfishing recurve in the morn depending on the weather! NOTE: SPEARFISHING REGS APPLY TO BOWFISHING.

I want to be able to throw it and hold up to a 20-40lb ray.
If it's a p-nut ray I would just try to free gaff them.
but I don't think my gaff can hold a 25+lb trying to get away.
When I fish Ft. Pierce I usually see 1-3 rays everytime I go.
I feel like I'm letting good bait just swim right by me.
I know you can just snag them but then you have to fight them.
I just want to spear them and put them on ice fast.

This was a 10lb ray and it was close to maxing my gaff.

but he swam right up to me.
then he saw me and took off right into my gaff.

Everyone was looking at me like I had done some magic trick.

I want to make something eveyone could use, and it could hold a big dog ray.

Gander Mtn. has long yellow fiberglass shafted harpoons/spear type deals ,use a "HAWAIIAN SLING" to propel them.......they have the sling too
actually any decent dive shop should have the sling at least;
We used to make them out of inner tube rubber; you cut a one piece "sling" out of an innertube then put the butt of the 'spear' in one end , & hook your thumb in the other, lay the spear along the inside of your arm, stretch the rubber super tight &hold the shaft when you spot ............a target, then line it up & let it GOOOO!

Amazing how there can be 6-10 foot waves in the pass one day, then slick the next.
