1. How long should you should let a fish run with the bait before setting the hook ?
2. If a fish is hooked in the throat or mouth and you don't get the hook out, does that mean it will die ?
3. Are arc-dehookers good ?
4. Are circle hooks better than J hooks ?

Honestly I usually let the fish run for quite a while and pretty much 99% of the time I get a corner of the mouth hookup. I use mostly J-hooks and I have no problem with them. As far as dehooking, sometimes the fastest an easiest way to de-hook is to cut your wire and pull the hook through backwards.

Hi Bill:

I use those dastadly J-hooks. I let the shark run exactly 25 feet. The length of my leader, if he makes it that far. The way I build my leaders, the shark has a 25 foot run. At the end of that run he will hit the sinkers and the hook will be set or not set. If I miss him i'll reel back that 25 feet of line and wait on another run. If he is still out there and cannot pull the 5 lb. sinkers out of the sand, well, I have no use for him. I'll go out the next morning and bring him in. In a nut shell, that's the way I do it. As far as J-hooks and circle hooks go, I use only J-hooks. I tried circle hooks many years ago and I never cought a single shark on them. Oh yes, I had the runs but no sharks to show for my efforts. I personally think J-hooks will out-preform circle hooks any day of the week, but that's just my opinion for what it is worth. I know there are lots of people here that will fight to defend their circle hooks.

Best and tight lines,

Norman Bateman
