question on new waters sharking
Hi all, I lived in fla for 34 years. Now the wife and I are heading to Eureka California on the water. I will be fishing there and kayaking my shark baits out. I already checked the law and its open all year around for shark fishing except great whites. So my question is
1. what type of gear will I need?
2. does anyone know if braid or mono is fine or do I need a specific? I ask because where I fished for sharks in naples either worked just fine but not sure about the bottom floors in cali
3. will a blue shark out pull the common 4-5 ft bulls and lemons im use to catching. Im not going for makos but I would like a leopard shark, blue, bronze or thresher. Im wondering if my 9/0 is ok for those.
I know there is no way of telling if a mako or white will hit my bait but if luck has it with the others listed will I be fine?
Please serious answers only. Im asking because I want to be prepaired
I have never heard of anyone getting a Bronze here, but the rest are all possible.
Also add Sevengill to that list. They have caught them to 11' in Humboldt Bay. For the big sharks fish cut bat ray. For bat rays and smaller sharks fish mackerel and squid. For the small sharks all you new to do is cast with a surf stick, not long drops needed.
Good luck man
It really depends on the beach. There are a lot of beaches with rocks and cliffs that would require mono, but some sand ones also that you can fish either.
I haven't fishes te east cost, so I can't comment on blue sharks vs. black tips/lemons.
A 9/0 would probably work fine for everything but the giants that roam here (more common than you would think).
Lowprofile has a better understanding of what your used to vs. California. You should message him also.
heres a list of sharks you can find on the west coast.

your 9/0 is a bit over kill unless you plan of dropping baits with a yak. most sharks are caught on 3/0 size reels (saltiest 50, sealine sha 50, penn 545, etc) and some thresher fishermen use the 4/0 off piers.
