Question - Problem with Circle Hooks Single Strand?
Recently I caught part of a discussion about circle hooks effectiveness being hindered by single strand wire. Something about the stiffness of single strand wire restricting the circle hook's ability to rotate in a fish's mouth; causing it to miss finding the corner of the jaw.
I obviously didn't get the details and was wondering if anyone knew anything about that ... ???
Hook swings pretty freely with a haywire twist if you ask me. I like to snell my circles when I use them for Snook, trout and reds with live bait anyway. Hookup just fine for me, usually in corner of mouth. I still prefer 14/0 VMC or 16/0 sea demon J hooks for my shark though. Never gut hooked a shark yet. Maybe my baits are just too big? Or luck. Idk.
I'm with Sandrayusmc when it comes to using j hooks. I use tandem hook rigs in all of my baits because trying to hook a trailer circle hook into a bait is, well, not easy for me. Tried circles didn't like them. And as for that cornor of the mouth thing, that was how close you came to not hooking up at all. It was the last place to catch before you missed the fish all together. Nope, I have no use for circle hooks and besides, half the fun of catching a shark is setting the hook and setting the hook and..... In over 50 years of shark fishing and using j hooks, I could count the number of gut hooked sharks I've had on one hand. Like Quigly said in the movie,"Said I had no use for them, never said I didn't know how to use them!"

its not luck its just, that js dont guthook like people say. i experimented with circles and the first shark i hooked was guthooked, and ive seen plenty of sharks where the circle didnt do its job like they say it does... i mean it still got the fish in, but not in the corner of the mouth lol.these hooks that i use, the southern tunas 12/0s have gotten every fish in the corner of the mouth so far.
Iv not had that problem. Iv knocked many a circle hook out of sharks mouths that was rigged with #19.
