First there is some info we would need to know, In order to even begin to ponder such a question.

like what reel/size/brand name

What line/size/

Where will you been fishing pier/bridge/beach/boat....or all of these.

One BIG question would also be how much experience do you have Sharkin?

Some other people will remember some more possabile questions that need answered.

Now as an example for me it would be and will be at some time soon.

Penn 12/0 9-10 foot unlimited blank 24 inches of cork or foam butt all rollers, 100+ Ande line.

and i would be fishing Bridge/pier.

Good luck with your search

It depends where you fish from but I use my 6' 130- unlimited rod everywhere I think long rods make you work more and are only good if you have to worry bout pilings I love my rod and never had a problem with it anywhere but to each his own depends what u like

I usually fish on a boat when i am home, but i only go home now 2 times a year and i have no boat here on the east coast so for me its either bridges piers or beaches

Long rods also keep your line elevated and out of the wash and mess of seaweed clusters that can potentially drag your bait back to the beach... in my opinion the type of guides on your rod doesn't make too much a difference as long as you buy them appropriately for your line capacity, I do fish a roller guide tip because I believe there is less of an angle and less strain on your line going out. I fish a long rod because I do a lot of pier/bridge fishing and it is necessary as proven when my biggest bull took several dives under the bridge. I have fished short rods and long rods, there is a difference in the fight but it isn't much to me...

Some people prefer beefsticks while others like noodles, if you find a blank with a good taper you can have the best of both worlds. I think the most manageable rods are 8-9ft long... 10ft gets troublesome and 7ft may run you a risk for those bridges and piers.

I would try out somebody else's shark rods and see if you like the feel of the rod and go from there... if you don't feel like building a rod but want a nice one two places I recommend is TimmyT he's on the forum, he does excellent jobs and has extremely fair if not cheap prices and he can build the rod of your dreams with shark teeth in it and all  and xgenrods <--- they have cheap used rods that are generally in great shape... a new rod will cost you a pretty penny but they are warrantied for life.

Just an average fisherman.
