saw these reels while surfing the web MSRP on them is $350, can get one on ebay fo $285. says it holds for line than the tld 50 2 speed. in the some of the youtube videos they say it is just a graphite international but with more drag power. Penn says it puts out 30lbs at strike and 40 at full which is a lot for a graphite reel. just wanted to hear some of your thoughts or if anybody has one. they did just come out this fall. think it would be a good replacement for my 9/0 ?

Penn is a legendary company, their products have caught world records and have lasted over the years. While I'm not a huge fan of Penn's newer reels I will say that this should be a good upgrade from a 9/0 and should last a lifetime with the proper care and maintenance. Load it down with 1000+ yards of 130 lb braid and then top it off with 130 lb mono and you should good for most sharks you will catch, just be prepared to lose your line when you hook king Kong.

The new Squall 2 speeds look pretty good. I have had fun with my squall 60.

Graphite is a great substance and can be very strong. It's greatest weakness would be an impact. Dont hit it with a bat or bash it on concrete and it should be great.

The graphite frame may even be stronger than the plate/ring/post frame of the senators of comparable size.

Well right now I have a 14/0 and a 80w, tbh over here on the west coast they really haven't been put in any real challenges. Ive noticed that I have more fun when hooking fish on the smaller 9/0. But I have heard bad things about the newer china made peens. Which is kinda why im optimistic about getting it

I would not trust a Chinese made senator (seen more than a few busted) but I'd trust a squall.

I spoke with Bass Pro employee and the guy at my local shop, they both said they have not had any squalls returned. Time will tell if this will hold true for the squall two speed. IF the Japanese could do a solid job with the TLD 30 and 50, I bet Penn can get it done @ there Chinese plants.

The 2-speed squalls are still awfully new for anyone to have put out a serious review yet. I have handled the 50 in the Bass Pro where I work and I was thoroughly impressed. It feels like a solid reel, is smooth, and the drag really locks down and is like butter. The clicker is probably louder than any reel I've ever played with.

This reel looks awesome, definitely a good 9/0 replacement at a price that is great compared to the shiny gold internationals

yea the whole combo cost me $350 so compared to the 50vsw international at 650 for just the reel its a great price. ill see how it holds up when i hook a nice fish but im sure it will be just fine lol

Picked up my 30 VSW last night. Since they spooled it for free I got 350 yards of 60 mono with a topshot of 80. The knots to the 130 and the 100 were not holding well so 80 was the next best thing. Ultimately I will slap some braid on here with a 130 topshot.

Running straight mono, this reel is a good 6/0 replacement. With a braid/mono set up it could even handle fish at 9/0 standards. The lower line capacity is compensated for by a better drag. Bass Pro rep said they have not had any returns and I like my old squall 60 so lets hope these things are as good as they are cracked up to be!

Here's my 30 VSW next to the squall 60. I grabbed a Penn Carnage 6'6" 50Lb rod for $50 from the reconditioned rod rack while I was there. Had some gunk on the foam but may have cleaned up nice! Otherwise rod was mint. Moved the squall 60 to that and put the 30 VSW on the Handcraft 50/100 with AFTCO stripper/tip.
