Hey there,

What upgrades can I get for my Senator 6/0 Special? I Was thinking about getting one of those Tiburon Conversion kit to make it a 6/0 wide or Extra wide.

What I am really looking for is drag upgrades. Does anyone make anything that will increase my drag. is there anything i can do to my reel to increase drag? Also Does Smoothdrag make the Carbontex Washers that fit the 6/0?

Pretty much I am trying to make this reel the best it can be.

Thanks guys,

Chris

You'll need to go to Carbon Drag washers. Use either the Penn Ht-100 or go with Smoothdrag.
Also, if you don't upgrade to a stainless steel gear sleeve, then when you lock down your new carbon drag to stop a monster you may strip your main gear. That new SS gear sleeve is well worth the upgrade. Be sure to use Alan Tani's sight to walk you through the process. He's the best. http://www.alantani.com

Here's a link to Penn Parts Schematic so you can find your reel and also the parts number

Buy a stainless steel gear sleeve from Elec-Tra-Mate

Hope This Helps and Good Luck!!!

Also, Here is a list of other things you'll need to do the job.
A few other costs/needed items:

Cal's Grease, (mandatory for the drag washers)
Marine Grease, for the reel
Tiny punch, to get the pin out of the main gear
Toothbrushes, to clean and apply grease
Carburetor cleaner and Simple Green, to clean inside of reel
CorrosionX, lube for other reel parts

The good news is that once you get the above, you can breakdown and clean almost any other Penn reel and many other conventional and spinning reels. In the long run the modest initial expense is worth it. Once I upgraded my 6/0, I went back and thoroughly cleaned all salt and fresh reels very thoroughly.

I just checked out that smoothdrag website and finally figured out what was in my 12/0 lol, it's a combination of the smoothies metal and carbon with some added xtreme smoothies (the red ones) 19 in total, that thing pushes intense drag, lifting me off the ground without holding the spool. 19 washers in total, some of the metal ones have rough surfaces too...

you can pack your 6/0 all the way with drag washers but then your reel will only have 2 settings, locked as hell and free spool... ask Stelarol on the forum about how he did that to his 4/0.

Just an average fisherman.

From what I understand (and I could be wrong) you can find smoothdrag washers (Carbon and SS) even thinner than what you get with the HT-100. That allows you the ability to have more washers, but keep the total drag stack height (thickness) the same. It would then be possible to create a custom drag upgrade that is stronger than the HT-100 and still keep the ability to control the star drag and not have to keep it just on lock down or free spool.

Just for my newbie mind ... would that 6/0 extra wide kit be a "just for fun" upgrade? It does sound fun. I'm thinking that just buying the 9/0 would get the same result. I'm asking, cause I'm afraid I'm missing something I have never heard of before. Thanks for your patience.

Your comments about upgrades made me think of the Penn 113h "TANK"

Yeah Pretty much, I really dont want to have two shark reels so I would like to max out my current reel until i have to buy one. Plus if i sell it in the future it will just be worth that much more.
