Other than cosmetic differences, are there any differences between the different colored sideplate penns? For example a black sideplate 9/0 and a red side plate one?

yes,

the difference is that the red side plates indicate that the reel is a Penn Special Senator. These have higher speed than the regular senators. You can get the special senators in 3/0, 4/0, 6/0 and maybe even 9/0.

No reds above 6/0.

And as far as i know the only difference is the color, i do not believe that all reds are any different than blacks, BUT i do believe all specials are reds.but all reds are not specials.

Thats true all reds might not be specials. If in doubt just look on the sideplate and the writing should tell you if its a special or a regular
