Ode To Montauk

It's that time of year again. The water temps drop, leaves turn colors, tourist leave Montauk and Monster Stripe Bass and Bluefish migrate around the point. Montauk is mecca for land based fishing. It's the surf casting capital of the world. Nothing but hard core surf casters living and breathing fishing in the cool weather 24hrs/day with the support of every hotel, resident, bar, restaurant, city, county, state, store, etc.....

The town is just past the Hamptons and shares many of the same qualities until the fall. Its and anglers paradise. Everyone is focused on surf casting or landing a shark/stripe bass from a boat.

Here a few pics and video. The videos give you a good sense of the town and people.

Skisshing - Only for the brave - usually performed at night time

Extradordinary place ,extraordinary fishing pics and an adventure that happens once a year.

Legendary place and fishing grounds of one of the best shark hunters of all times Capt Frank Mundus.

Thanks for the report Chris.

I thought I was somewhat hardcore until seeing that post. You will never catch me out there getting pounded by waves in freezing cold weather/water. But i guess if you live up in the NorthEast, you only get a few chances to fish a year with good results. We live in Florida and have all year to enjoy fishing, so I stay inside on days like some of those pictures.

Hardcore fishing like that deserves great catches and much respect.

Just an average fisherman.

If more people thought like fishermen:

We would'nt have welfare cause just
like those surf fishermen they'd know
a little effort even under adverse condictions
will evently bring home the bacon.
Those guys are hardcore passionate about thier sport
to the point the whole community is envolved and
benifits from the sport. Just some random thoughts
while looking at the photos.

Based on thous pictures, the only way to deploy shark baits out would be with a jetski - forget kayaks!

Looks like a blast! I wouldn't be wading out that deep at night knowing what swims around those areas. lol
