Not the kind of press sharkfisherman need.
I came across this as a post on the Guy Harvey facebook page. Just thought I would post it so everyone could see.

Guys we have to remember that there are people out there that would like nothing more than to see shark fishing banned totally. We have to do everything we can to be responsible fisherman which include using the safest gear for fish we plan to release and havesting those that are to badly injured so they are not wasted. Lets not give those that want to see our sport destroyed the ammuntion to do it.
I have seen alot worse. Atleast ole Guy didnt down it much. He is a tag and release fisherman, I am a catch and kill if I want to because its my fish, fisherman. Guy wants us to release everything. He is against longliners and all that stuff. But any way, yall might give those circle hooks a try, yall might like them. Its all in how ya rig the hook to the bait. And if we are realy shore enough tag and release fishermen we are useing circle hooks.

Said the angler was using a j HOOK. I know we dont want to miss the hook up, but I remember years ago when I used to use them and I would gut hook a shark nearly one 1/3 of the time. That definitely kills them. Live bait hooks are the way to go, or even circle like Polk said. The largest tiger shark I caught last year I caught her a 2nd time 2 weeks later, it wouldnt have happened with the J.

A J hook? Well, that one hell of a note. Some angler using a J hook? All My life that's all I have ever used. And as long as I can find them that's all I'll ever use.

I started using J hooks on my bigger shark rigs..I hate how mono stretches I do not feel like giving the shark time to take the stretch out of that mono line..I just also think it gives him plenty time to spit the hook before it sticks. I haven't gut hooked any sharks with a j hook..most of the hook sets are right in the front side of the mouth just like a circle hook would. I think the runnin' man helps yank the hook to the front of the shark's mouth, so far I've had no problems. Sometimes in fishing, fish die. The only way to be sure you never kill a shark is to not fish for them. I work hard to catch my fish and work hard to release them though I will keep a 4-5' blacktip on occasion it is within the law..these people trying to give shark fishermen a bad name need to get a life and if they are so passionate about sharks why don't they go attack the real problem the longliners instead of attacking recreational fishermen who account for a minuscule fraction of the sharks which are killed each year.

More power to you. I guess I'm just a little bit on the conservative side. I kill a few blacktips a year and I kill one tiger a year for the SC shark tourny, but I know if I was using J hooks on a daily basis, I could really thin out the tiger population. Years ago I hooked one with a J hook and fought it for 2 hours only to find out we hooked its stomach and pulled it around with its stomach hanging out of her mouth....as we got her boat side she bit down and bit her stomach in half, pretty sick. That shouldnt have happened, total waste of a 50 yr old fish and bad move on my part. I switched to live bait hooks cause it doesnt kill the shark and you can even get your hook back cause its always in the corner. Just my 2 cents..
Regardless, best of luck this season!

You're right. The longliners do some serious damage. Its amazing the restrictions they put on fisherman, but the longliners can rape the ocean 24-7. Good work on hooking the shark with the J in the corner, I couldnt do it to save my life. I must have gut hooked 100 sharks before I switched. The majority of my charters are for tiger sharks, so I'm naturally extra adamant of a clean release here. But you're right, sometimes fish die.
