yes a 12 has i think 10lbs more. but like i said if your just getting into it a 9 is perfect there cheap reliable and if you come to find out shark fishing isnt for you your not out a bunch of money because you can use it for grouper fishing and alot more sport fishing where a 12 and up aren't that good for grouper fishing. you can do it but who wants to sit and hold a 12 or 14 for hours at a time grouper fishing.

i dont think its worth 300. check ebay and see what there going for on there.

the 12/0 only has a lb or two more drag but alot more line capacity. I have a 9/0 and 6/0 now though and I love them both. I honestly wouldnt spend $300 on it if you cant find something on CL watch ebay. You can get a 9/0 with a rod for under $200 and 6/0 are a dime a dozen and even cheaper on CL.

Def agree with monoxide on the 9/0 and just pack it with braid to make up for the line capacity, thats what I just did with mine.

I see in that website on the 80w international specs that the ones in the 80s had wooden handles.. the one im looking at has a black plastic one does that mean its not that old or atleast from the 80s?

alot of people buy aftermarket handles for more cranking power. so it could be a after market handle or it could be that penn offered that reel with different handles.

i recommend looking for a 9/0 that will be the best bet easy to find and low maintenance. if mine wasn't passed down to me by family i would trade you for that shotty you have for sale prolly toss some cash in.

You wont be disappointed with a 9/0 especially to start with. I would go with 80 braid 100 mono top shot. Even that is overkill with the amount of drag it has. I actually just did 80 dacron backing with 100 mono top shot on mine.
Im looking for a 12/0 or up for the street sweeper

Its alot more reel than a 6/0 but a big hammer or tigers probably gonna smoke a 9/0 and probably even a 12/0. I know at the very least the guys going for monsters use 14/0's mostly 16/0's or avet 80's. But your gonna spend a small fortune on those outfits. But I know Will just posted a pic of a huge 12 or 13' tiger caught on a 9/0 off of a pier at that.
