Im just starting this whole land based sharkfishing thing. I live in Boca Raton; Does anyone know which beaches i should start at for my first couple sharks? AN more importantly Im getting a new setup, im used to west coast fishing so i dont know what reel to get. I am thinking about getting a 12/0 senator.. Any good suggestions my limit is 350$... Im guessing the reel is gonna need to hold LOTS of line!! im hoping to paddle out 100-200 yds.. and plus the fight so ill need lots.. BUt im new so i dont really now about this type of fishing.. ALl info appreciated thanks!

it's really hard to find a good set up $350 anymore, but with a lot of patience and a little luck u can have some nice set ups,
in about a year i attained this custom 12/0 and 9ft rod for $200

, and a 9/0 with rod for $90, id say try a fishing consignment store, there is one on US-1 in juno called fishermen's consignment last time I was there they had a 12/0 there for like $150, there are also many used rod shops all throughout lakeworth and juno area like in lantana: X-generation rods, sometimes they get their hands on nice used rods and price them really cheap.

Hope this helps

Thats cool, thanks. I might be able to get my hands on a Penn International 80 wide... Do ou think that would be a good real for sharking from beaches and what not.. IDK if it can hold as much line as a senator though
Oh and what t did the fish end up being in that pic???

An 80 wide can work. I have an Avet 80W (tiny bit bigger than penns) as do several other members. The main thing about the international is you have to keep it clean as the sand will destroy if you don't take care of it. An 80W holds a little less than a senator 12/0. But you can fill it with some braid on the bottom to add capacity.

X-Gen in Lantana has a new 12/0 and a used 12/0 (I think that reel is 350). If you go down there, if you buy the reel he might give you a really good deal on one of the used rods there.

The cool thing about the internationals compared to the senators is the powerful drag, but as cfronczek89 said, u get sand in them and they get ruined...

and I got this little bull

Get an international just keep it clean! Alot smoother drag and you can put alot more pressure on the fish.

Heres the specs on that reel according to this they were replaced in the 80's so its at least 30 years old.

For that kind of money you can do better especially if your gonna buy a rod anyway. I was watching a 14/0 that sold on ebay today for $305. That reel doesnt even have the line capacity of a 12/0 senator. Hope this helps. Are you in the Ft Myers area?
Heres a 12/0

not as much i dont have a paddle for my yak.

edit. if you are just getting into shark fishing and dont have many spots i would get a 9/0 to start off with. they dont cost much and there great all around reels. if you want to get bigger sharks spool it with braid for the yardage. also some piers only let you use up to a 6/0 but a 9/0 if you take the front clamp off it looks just like a 6/0 and nobody can really tell just by looking at it

I was thinking about a 9/0 to... does a 12 have a higher drag power when locked out?
