Not really related to mutton snappers, but here in Sweden we have a sort of pike pretty much the same as you have (not a muskey). And i can tell you have used evrything for bait.
If u take and old beer can put a hook in it throw it in the the grass along the shore you can see the pike just gonig crazy from the splashing when it's puleld in the surface.
Actually had a large one attack a half a gallon bottle that i used as a float trying to eat it.

Last time I was in Islamorada while sitting on the dock eating dinner on the water I was watching the Mangrove Snapper swim around. I dropped them an ice cube from my drink. As soon as it hit the water one smashed it, so I laughed and dropped a french fry, smashed that too. I was amazed at what those things will eat! And pretty good sized ones too. Big enough to eat a lemon wedge out of my Mother in laws drink . I fed them all kinds of stuff that day. I wanna throw topwaters at them next trip down ;). I tried to get the guys at Robby's to let me throw hookless topwaters and play with the Tarpon but that was outta the question 8-) woulda made for some awesome photography!

Think I Saw A Video On Americas Funniest Videos Of A Guy Hand Feeding 100lb Tarpon, When He Went To Stick His Hand In The Water To Feed THE TARPON GOT A HOLD OF HIS HAND AND WOULDNT LET GO FOR A GOOD 10sec. Needless To Say Pretty Raked Up Nuckeles!

I do it every time I hit Islamorada :D Put your hand low enough at Robby's dock and you will get grabbed! Sometimes they get you up to the upper forearm, the tourists love it. First time I took my father in law we told him to lay on his belly and dangle the sardine an inch off the water. He immediately got grabbed by the hand and just about fell in, was hilarious. He was instantly hooked, kept making me get more sardines . Every time we go to the Keys first stop is always Robby's. Kind of like a ritual now. I heard from the guys recently a 5-6ft tipper or spinner has mixed in with the Tarpon and is hanging around and the guys arent letting anyone feed em right now. That could turn out pretty nasty.

When I Was In School In Kendall I Lived In BoysTown Of FLA. Was There 8yrs.
The Head Director Of BoysTown Had A Home On The Bay Side Of Key Largo By Penny Camp.
He Actually Made Under His Boat Dock A Artifical Reef Out Of Scrap Iron And Coral Heads. Coolest Thing I Ever Saw! :o He Would Literally Stomp On The Dock At Dusk Every Night And You Had To See All The Different Spieces Of Marine Wild Life That Would Come Right Up To His Dock! Sharks(Lemons, Bulls, Hammers, Blacktips,)Giant Parrott Fish ,Angel Fish, Rays, Even Jelly Fish And Lobsters! He Use To Feed These Fish fried Chicken, Cuban Bread, What Ever Bait Fish There Was During The Season. He Would Even Give Manatees Romain Lettace And Fresh Water Out Of His Hoses. And Techaly Thats A Big No No. I Loved That Place And Would Beg Him To Take Me There Every Weekend!
