How to Shrink Wrap a Shark Leader

(@willowcatfish)
New Member

Hey guys,

Whether it makes a difference or not, I notice a lot of guys shrink wrap their leaders and swivels. In some photos it looks really clean looking to. Is their a specific way these people do this, or are there a ton of different ways? I'm looking to try it out, and looking for a way to do it.

Stupid me!!! I tried to do it with regular shrink wrap in the kitchen. Man did I create a frkn' mess! A shark would have laughed in my face if it saw it! :)

Any helpe would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks all and Great fishing to ya!

Ray

The trick is to start off with the right size tube of wire shrink wrap. This can be found at places like Granger, or home depot. When you cut the tubing to size make sure the cut is clean and straight. To shrink the tubing on the leader a blow dryer works good. The rest is just practise.

Thanks MrAnsel,

For your reply and help! I'm going to check out some of those tubes at Home Depot or Harbor Freight.

Have a Great week man!

You can also use electrical tape. I used to try this but then I stopped. Didnt seem to make a difference for me.

Thanks BG for sharing that. I am hearing so many people having no problems catching sharks without it, so i'm probably going to no get into it.

There is a whole post dedicated to this question. One of the veterans said "yall think too much, get a nice bait, put a hook in it and leave it alone"
I stopped trying it and things are workin. I guess there is a chance the shark could get spooked by biting into a hook but you never know for sure.

Thanks for sharing that BG, cause I can really tend to psych myself out, with all of my fishing, and just need to LIGHTEN up and GO FISH!

Peace out Brother!

Ha ha! I understand the overthinking. A while ago, I literally had to stop, simplify and fish.

-Combo? Check.
-Leaders? Check.
-Hooks? Check.
-Sinkers? Check.
-Bait? Check.
-Sand spikes? Check.
-Chair? Check.
-Water, beer and sammiches? Check.

-Cell phone? Nope.

Time to hit the beach.

If anyone needs to simplify there shark fishing, that would be me. When I first started I could fit everything into a backpack. Now 35+ years later it seems like I need a u haul to get everything to the beach.

I definitely have a written checklist as well blackninja. Don't know if yours is in your head or on paper, but if I didn't do it, I'm forgetting. Thank God I've overcome the Yellow Sticky Note era of my life.

I also agree that it is best to keep shark fishing simple.Only bring what's absolutely necessary and what has proven to work for you.

The battle bucket!

Everything you need goes in the bucket and stays in the bucket.

Get some wheels for the yak, everything goes on the yak, if it doesnt fit, ya dont need it. then ya make one simple trip. (just dont forget the wheels like I did last time, then it is a couple trips with gear)

in my bucket I have:
rigs, wire cutters, bolt cutters, flashlights, head lamps, bug spray, gloves, camera, brick line, poncho, sinkers, tape, trash bags, tagging needle, neck knife, coozies.

Then before I leave I run through my mental checklist.

Rod, spike, yak, paddle, wheels, bucket, bait, bricks, chair

BAM

When you shrink wrap tubing onto any part of your rig, it's best to drop it in boiling water, rather than any other type of hot air gun/dryer. This way, there is no danger of damaging mono or braid. I use heat shrink extensively, I even use a small thin piece to go over the finished glued serve of my HC to Mono splices. It gives that joint extra protection.
