I was in some of the fishing stores here in kuwait and I saw a rod looked like a good rod with a good price. but it was only 5' long. I was thinking of getting it and putting a 9/0 but I what to know if will work. Can I set the hook and fight a good shark from land with a short rod.

Surely, my 14/0 is on a six foot 130lb class Star Rod. Although my 12/0 is on an eight foot Star Rod. I prefer longer rods in general but use both depending on where I go and what baits I have. Id also say it depends on what reel you plan on using with it. A 9/0 or smaller I prefer long rods, so I can do my best impression of "casting" with it  I think its mainly a preference thing. For piers/bridges I use long, for beach Ill use both. Hope that helps.

Do you have any problems setting the hook?

Nope, only difference I've noticed is depending where the seaweed is the short rods will get it worse at times. You cant really fish them sitting down in the sand because the butts too short, but we've never really had that luxury anyway the fish usually make us play leap frog with the other lines in the water. Just get a good harness and hold on!

Hey Milsharker:

Yes, I use some real short rods. The two that I fish with are 5' 3". They are old but they top of the line Harnells. You probably never heard of Harnell rods but, they were the best that money could buy when they were in business. Ask all of the old timers that are in the shark fishing business. Most anyone of them would kill for a Harnell. Well, that's about all I had to say.

I did some sharking while I was in Kuwait, and about the best spot is off the giant concrete pier at KNB. If you have access to go off base, the beaches down by the Saudi border are a good place too. You can also get into some Tiger's and pretty big spotted guitar fish over there. Good luck and be safe!!!!

Ha Norman,
I have heard and seen a Harnell rod. My grandfather had one of thier fly rods and I remember how much he loved it and how good he was with it. He was the best I ever seen with a fly rod. You put one in my hands and you better look out because I will hook everything but the fish. I did not know that they made big game rods. I guess I would kill to have one also. Which gives me something to do. Find one for me. Thax for the info.

KNB is Kuwaiti Naval Base down south past Arifjan, I used to do very good down there. Mullet are pretty easy to net, and make great bait. I caught Grouper, Snapper, King Macks, Cuda, shark, and plenty of big Queenfish off that pier. You can get a cheap castnet at the hardware stores in Fahaheel. There is also a great pier across from where I used to live in Mahboula behind the McDonalds. It's an old broken down beach club called The Gazelle Club. I got to know the security gaurds and owners very well, so I could fish that 3 story pier 24/7. I would give them whatever I caught, because that water is NASTY!!!! You can easily throw a net off that pier for bait or hit up the fish market for some mullet and squid; which were the two best baits. I also did very well with top water lures and 1 3/4oz butterfly jigs. October was the best month for Kings & Queenfish, you will see them skying on baits at that little pier behind Gazelle Club. Good luck to you and keep us posted. Just be careful off the end of the big concrete pier on KNB, I lost quite a few small kings to GIANT grouper that hide straight down. The only thing they would hit is your splashing fish right at the surface!!!!!! Good luck, be safe, and don't drink too much SIDIKI......the hangover is hell......or so I heard!!!!!
