Great whites like AC/DC

GREAT white sharks in the ocean off South Australia have an affinity with music fans around the world - they love AC/DC.

And their favourite album is the classic Back in Black.

Several times a week Matt Wallace's Adventure Bay Charter company cruises south of Port Lincoln to view the world's largest predatory fish.

Turning up the music on his boat, Mr Wallace finds the great whites prefer AC/DC music to other bands - or even the usual berley.

"We know the AC/DC music works best by trial and error and we are doing more research to see what works best with different species of shark," he said.

It started when Mr Wallace did some research on the internet to build up business for his great white shark cage diving experience.

"I asked a couple of them how to attract sharks and they said they hear best at frequencies below 200 Hertz," he said.

AC/DC's low frequency music hit the spot.

"I've seen the sharks rub their faces on the cage where the sound is coming from as if to feel it."

The attraction of great white sharks to AC/DC music echoes the practice of Pacific Islanders in attracting sharks by rattling coconut shells together under water.
