Goliath grouper vs. regular grouper

Hey all,

How can you tell the difference between a goliath grouper and a regular grouper? Obviously goliaths get much bigger, but how can you tell the diff between say a 20 pound goliath and a 20 pound regular grouper.

Hi Blake,
Jewfish or Goliath Groupers are actually more closely related to seabass than groupers. If you look at the tail, it is rounded instead of having pointed tips. They live in waters from the mangroves out to the reefs and a bit beyond. Goliath Groupers usually like to hang out in caves or other rocky structures that they can hide in. The color is different on a Goliath Grouper. The ones that I have seen, which were caught in the Florida Keys looked a yellowish green in coloration and have a less stream lined, shorter, more rounded shape. I hope this helps! :)
