FGCU
Next fall, I will finally be moving down to attend Florida Gulf Coast University. I have been waiting seemingly forever to finally move down, and anytime I am not studying I will be fishing hard. I definitely plan on becoming a regular at Big Carlos Pass
If anyone has any advice on the area (I know a lot of you fish it) it would be much appreciated. Most of my sharking has been a little further north around Tampa, and not quite sure what to expect down in Ft. Myers. Looks like you guys get a lot of lemons around there? Also, places to catch bait (I'm thinking rays, mullet, and jacks up in Estero bay?) would be great. Being further south, is the fishing generally better than Tampa during the winter? Thanks for any and all advice. Looking forward to meeting some of you guys that fish that area. I'm pumped to come down, start working on my Marine Science degree, and be able to fish every weekend. Still not sure how I'm going to fit frozen rays into my dorm's mini fridge though... ![]()
The fishing is better if you have a kayak, canoe, or boat to get away from the crowds and if you do that its probably better than tampa. If you go to the south of FGCU to the 10000 islands theres lots of secluded areas with great fishing.
I used to have a mini fridge/freezer when I lived at USF and I was able to pack a bunch of dinnerplate rays in there. Another option is to get a big cooler and keep it constantly full of ice and keep your bait in it. If you keep the ice fresh and the cooler full the rays will last a while. Look around campus in the science building hallways for ice machines or make friends with the food service people and there is all the free ice you want. It shouldn't be hard to find one since you are a marine science major. Good luck down there.
My brother went to that school, its nice as hell and pretty "chill" btw
There are a few ponds on campus that are filled with HUGE BASS. He used to screw with them with his fly rod just for kicks. Freezers: At Lowes we dent up and sell display "chest freezers" pretty cheap from time to time. Keep an eye out at Lowes and Home depo there are ALOT of "non-driving forklift drivers"
.
Thanks for all the advice guys. Like I said I can't wait to get down there and fish. @Midnight Dreamin- I have a kayak at my grandparent's in Tampa, albeit a sit-in, but I don't think I'll have a way to get it down and store/transport it if I did. I'm probably going to focus mainly on fishing off of Big Carlos Pass bridge and maybe the Sanibel bridge. I like bridge fishing better than beach anyway, easier to fish, you don't get wet and sandy, and clean-up is easier. Some of the pictures of sharks i've seen caught off that bridge make it pretty tempting too
Also, good to know there's precedent for using a dorm mini-fridge as bait storage. Good thing I'm going for apartment style housing, no way anyone would be my roommate.
@sandrayusmc- thanks for the tip about the bass, I figured on bringing some freshwater stuff with me for between classes, good to know it's worthwhile. I don't know if I'll be able to afford a fridge expressly for bait storage, but thats good advice about the scratch and dent discounts. My dad is always finding those deals at the Lowes by us. We have an upright fridge, an upright freezer, and a chest freezer all courtesy of scratch and dent lowes discounts ![]()
