Economical Conventional Shark Setup

Hey guys,

After I complete my SURF FISHING SHARK outfit with a Spinfisher 8500, and chosen 12' Shark Surf Rod, I want to get an economical conventional setup for yaking out some baits.

I'm not talking about "BIG SHARK"(8' long and longer sharks)setups. Just a setup that would handle 5'-7' sharks well.

I was thinking about getting a Penn Senator for a good price. And then an economical Rod to pair the reel with.

Just asking what size Senator is best for these size sharks? And what Rod type and size would be good for this setup(should I use just a Regular rod or a Standup Rod). I noticed Ugly Stik makes a 80# class standup, I'm not sure if that's a good idea.

Open to any and all suggestions and advice.

Thankyou all and have a great day!

Ray

A 4/0 or 6/0 would work well for that size. Look for the high speed too, they have red side plates. get a used, vintage one from ebay, with a chrome spool.

A good choice for a economical shark setup for 5-7' sharks close to shore would be a 8 foot Ugly Stik Rod (BWB 1120 rated at 40-80lbs) paired with a 4/0-6/0 Penn Senator Reel or Penn Fierce 8000 spinning reel( if you want a economical spinning reel). This setup will cost you under $200 and should land you some sharks.I mostly use the 8' Ugly Stik with a Penn Fierce 8000 Spinning Reel and have yet to have problems with this setup when catching 6-8' sharks.
