Duel reel ?

I have a chance to pick up a 4/0w for the same price as an avet exw, which I already own. There's not a lot of info out there on duels but from what I've read they seem to handle the sand better. What do you think is the better reel? What about getting the duel service is there anywhere in the US to send it. Any info on duels is appreciated!
Thanks,
Ryan

Duels Are A Penn Product, Any Good Tackle Store Should Have Info On Them. As Far As Them Handling In Sand Vs Any Other Reel The Price You Pay For Dependability Is Alway Worth ;)

Duels are NOT a penn product, they are a hand-made italian craft top of the line super reel. They put avets to shame on every aspect and are preferred by many good marlin fishermen. I know a guy that helped design them and I can put you in contact with him for service or capt. harry's in miami will service it. The only draw back is that they are considered to have a ratcheting feature and do not count for IGFA world record catches.

I fought a sailfish on the pier with the 4/0w, took down many blacktips and tiger sharks on it and it has hit the sand before, it's totally sealed so sand will never see the gear box. Fished the 12/0w, which I've seen an 8ft bull shark in heavy current does not become a challenge for. I also own an avet and have fished other sizes of those reels too, I like my avet a lot but if it were my choice I'd trade for a duel any day.

Just an average fisherman.

What do you mean ratcheting feature? Is that what everyone talks about, how they shift into a lower gear by cranking them backwards? Is forward normal and reverse a ratchet? Never heard of this before.

Ratcheting is referring to moving the handle back and forth a couple inches both ways, not making a complete turn of the handle either way. Using that method on the Duel is possible and a great way to winch up a fish.

I've tried it but it doesn't do very well, you're better off just using the sheer cranking power of the low speed on it.

Did some test with the 12/0w and a bicycle... full speed on the bike down hill I got stopped dead in my tracks after the mono stretched fully

and my buddy got on the bike and I got behind the reel and he dragged me a bit forward since he's a lot bigger than me.
