Circle hook rigging
Hi I must admit I am new to using big hooks and before you ask I have searched on here and on the internet for hours or even days for the right answer!!
I usually snell my smaller circles and it works good but with the hooks I wish to use and crimping it looks like I have a problem. Most people seem to just put the wire through the eye and crimp. I want to run the line through the eye from the front as circle hooks are meant to be rigged (unless on a shark that poses an issue of line getting near teeth)
Here is my hook 85mm long 53mm wide and 32mm gape.
See the sharp hook end of the eye. Its not welded but thinking of welding them to get rid of it.
And when you run line or wire through it can contact the sharp wire end. Even if I just put it through and crimp it can still get round there and cut through.
Should I just ignore it and add tape over that part to get the line pulling correctly instead??
This has been doing my head in for over a week now sitting on the table in front of me saying I'm good but could be better.
I electrical tape my leaders and hooks so it makes my leader to hook connection rigid. I also use single strand #19 wire so its a pretty stiff leader as it is. I like the hook up ratio I get with the stiff connection. I mainly use J hooks though. I like to snell my circles when I use them for Tarpon but I rarely use em for Shark.
i always use wire on my hooks mostly the multi strand and crimp on. With this
I don't have to worry about the line getting cut by the fish or the hook. It seems
to me most salt water fish have teeth. I just use smaller lighter wire for small fish
and bigger for the big fish. I don't seem to have a problem with hook-ups using
crimps. I fish both circle and J hooks.
Any reason for that shilty11
I have considered welding the eye to make it stronger and smoother.
Been looking at all my local tackle shops and cant find any decent circle hooks anywhere.
Might get some from internet if I know what I need.
I will only run circle hooks these days.

I use only brazed or "welded eyes", or sometimes needle eyes when I come across them. I forgot to add that. Ive had too many hooks either open the eye or the wire slip through that tiny gap. Either way, fish lost and just reel in a leader missing the hook.
what he said ^^^. when making your rigs try to eliminate as many potential hazards as you can. youll be very upset with yourself when you lose a large shark and realize the cause was something that you could have prevented. especially when you reel it in and see a knot with a cut loop and no hook.

You're getting great advice from both shilty& Sandy
Don't waste your time welding hooks either, you could take the temper out of the steel ,for one thing, another is any flea market ,if you can't find it anyplace else will have the hooks you want
I don't know how many 4ft sharpnoses & others I threw back when I was really SNOOK fishing with #4 circle hooks ,pinfish[ live bait] & 17# trilene XL ,& NO wire,
It was luck I know but I was holding the casting rod [ 6'Snook Assassin 20# custom/Ambassaduer 6500Ci/ ] & just livelining ,casting along the beaches I'd hit them as soon as they struck , & that circle hook would be right in the corner of thier mouths.
