So there's not much luck to be had from a boat I'm and around the canals? Sounds like Sanibel is my best bet.

There is plenty luck to be had from a boat in the canals, or from land in the canals in Cape Coral. If you like tarpon fishing, go to an area where 2 or more canals intersect, and preferably close to the river. You also want one of the wider canals so you will have room to fight your catch. Fish for catfish until you get closer to the end of the tide. Drop a catfish tail or mullet chunk down with no weight toward the end of the outgoing tide and hold on. Some of the canal tarpon are well over 7' long and 150 lbs. There are also a lot of monster snook, huge jacks, big jewfish, a lot of sawfish, and a lot of smaller bulls. When the outgoing tide coincides with sunset that is the best time. Also, all the local bridges on the river each hold monster tarpon..from 31 bridge to Cape Bridge. Good luck.

Thanks for the info. As far as bigger sharks go, is there any luck to be had in the river or are nearby beaches my best shot?

The river is mostly small bulls, and the nearby beaches ain't much better

If I were you I'd try the river and canals since you're right by there..I got 2 tarpon over 6' long in less than 2 hours of fishing yesterday, jumped a 3rd, and all this is 2 blocks down from my house..I'll take that over 90-95% of the sharks I've seen or heard of landed from these beaches. Or you could go to Sanibel, pay $6 to go over their causeway, pay $2 per hour to park, and risk getting cut off on the shell bottom or best case scenerio you hook a 7.5' lemon that will swim right in to you.

How do you recommend rigging for tarpon? Also hook size and type (circle or J)?
