I was fishing by Englewood beach today, and this fish washed up. It was well over 100 pounds. Just curious what kind of fish it is?

That's a louvar. Wow ! I think any fish biologist would be interested in having it. They're really rare.

Hey where's the pic of the louvar I wana see it. I've heard of them before.. sometimes ppl catch them when they are fishing for billfish way offshore.. but I don't know anyone who has ever caught one.

They're REALLY REALLY rare.. but they are an offshore pelagic fish.. I wonder if the oil spill forced him closer inshore and thats when something took a whack at him.

Hard to tell with the tail missing but I dont think it was that big. Im 6'2 and without the tail it would probably come up to the bottom of my chest. Im going back Saturday morning if theres anything left of it ill get a pic with somethin to give it scale. And I didnt even think about the spill but ill bet it had somethin to do with it. He had to of died pretty close to shore it was 90 and he wasnt even stiff yet or smell. Really cool fish though had all the residents scratchin their heads.

kyddvicious666,
Please call the nearest college or marine lab to see if they want to look for it today. It's probably still there. I'm guessing that a specimen of such a rare animal is a rare opportunity for scientists. Maybe tissue samples could tell them something about these fish and in particular THAT fish. Considering what's been happenning in the gulf, it might be important.
